We are King's DRS! We serve to promote undergraduate research within the Dental Institute at KCL.

20/04/2026

We’re excited to invite you to our upcoming online talk with Dr Daniel Stonehouse-Smith, Specialist Orthodontist and Clinical Academic.

Dr Stonehouse-Smith has followed an academic specialty training pathway, including completion of an MRC-funded PhD. His research explores the cellular mechanisms involved in palate development, and how changes in cell behaviour can contribute to both normal development and conditions such as cleft palate.

In this session, he’ll be sharing insights into the different pathways into clinical academia and specialty training, as well as the benefits and challenges of this career. He’ll also reflect on how fundamental basic science, including embryology, remains highly relevant to everyday clinical practice and patient care.

Can successful root canal treatment improve overall health?

A new clinical study from King’s College London suggests that effective endodontic treatment may reduce inflammation linked to cardiovascular disease and improve blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Researchers followed 65 patients with apical periodontitis and analysed their blood chemistry 2 years after successful root canal treatment using NMR technology.

This research has received global media attention, with coverage across 810 outlets worldwide. Highlighting the growing recognition of the oral–systemic health connection.

Ever wondered how to keep doing research after you graduate or what it’s like to combine research with Foundation Training?

We’ve got two Academic DFTs joining us to share their experiences - how they balanced clinical work with research, what the application process was like, and tips for securing a DFT post.

The Academic DFT is a prestigious and competitive pathway that allows you to undertake your DFT while also developing in research, teaching, or education - a great way to stay involved in academic dentistry beyond dental school.
