MeCCSA Radio Studies Network, London (2026)

The original Radio Studies Network was founded in December 1998 and became a MeCCSA Network in January 2010. It was agreed to add 'and Audio' to its title at the end of 2024 reflecting the shift in members' research interests and teaching practice towards podcasting, audio journalism, drama and so forth. In 2025, MeCCSA created specialist thematised Sections within its membership, thus removing the term 'network' from the RAS. MeCCSA RAS aims to encourage sustained, lively and critical research and scholarship in the field of radio broadcasting and related areas such as podcasting, radio journalism, and audio production. By encouraging dialogue and collaboration and creating opportunities to critically reflect upon our work, we seek to consolidate and expand our academic and cultural status in the UK and beyond. Our leadership team, listed below, is supported in this work by an Advisory and Action Panel. As well as this page, MeCCSA Radio and Audio Studies continues to subscribe to the original Radio Studies list, an international forum on JISCmail for teachers, researchers and broadcasters and encourages you to join our discussions there or on X/Twitter. We also run an Online Reading Group for postgraduate students and early career researchers which meets regularly to discuss set texts, with information and updates available on our blog. In addition, we host Q&As with featured authors as well as 5 x 5 Sandbox sessions in which members can share and pitch research projects. Recordings of these sessions are available on our YouTube channel.

For any academics attending the MeCCSA Conference this week, don't forget our RAS 📻🎙️ 🎧 annual business meeting tomorrow lunchtime (Thursday 3rd Sept), 12.30 - 13.30. Room tbc (it will be published in the conference programme).

Whilst we confer to decide our choice, we would like to remind you that the Call for Papers is also ongoing. The deadline is the end of August. We just require your written outline at this stage please.

Call for Host – Online Symposium in February 2027

We're doing it again! MeCCSA Radio And Audio Studies Section are holding an online symposium around WRD time.

Theme: Diversity in Radio and Audio (People, Practices, Formats) - covering research, teaching and practice interests from new voices in radio and podcasting to power, politics, and public service broadcasting.

Date: Friday 12th February 2027
Time: 9.30am - 12.30pm UK time (with a short break)
Format: Free online event - keynotes, short papers (10 mins), Q&As, networking

We are looking for a volunteer host or a small team of volunteers from the same university to coordinate the event and lead technical hosting for our 2027 online event, with the administrative support of our Leadership Team and Advisory and Action Panel.

This is a great opportunity to shape an international event, build your leadership portfolio, and connect with researchers globally – all from your desk. Especially for Early Career Researchers, hosting signals initiative and organisational capability. And you won't be alone – we provide mentorship and troubleshooting.

Open to academics worldwide, except where the UK morning time would require overnight hosting.

What you'll do: Coordinate schedule, manage speakers, host live sessions, and work with your institution's technical support to access a pro bono virtual meeting platform.
