(A slightly belated) Happy New Year!

Many of us have been so pleased to say goodbye to a year and although we have challenges ahead, there is more to be optimistic about in 2021. We hope it will be a healthy and happy year for all of you.

January should have been the start of training for those of us at the Budokwai but with the change in tiers and now a further lockdown on schooling, we will have to wait. Of course, as soon as training is allowed either in London or Devon, we will be back on the mat and will let you know.

We are fortunate in our ryu to have so many aspects of training that naturally allow us to keep distance. They are also an easy way for us to get back into the swing of things after a break.

I’m glad to say that Soke is in great spirits, despite a sore back, and he is very keen to get back to Europe as soon as it is safe to visit. We don’t yet know when this might be but will keep our options open as we see how the coming months unfold.

Do keep safe. Look after yourselves and those around you, doing your best at whatever is the most important thing for you at this challenging time. Our school has lasted some 400 years, so we will get through this and then do our part to support its future.

All the very best to everyone. We hope to be able to welcome you back on the mat before long.
