34: Guftagu #3: Aurat (Women's) March 30/03/2020

“Our slogan this year was ‘behnchara ke baghair no guzara’, which means ‘nothing without sisterhood’, and I feel that in the depth of my soul, because of the sisterhood, community, and collective love I felt for these women … we all pushed through, we held each others’ hands, and we still marched.”

This week, we talked to Mahnoor Omer, an organiser for Aurat March (Women’s March) in Islamabad about the growing feminist movement in Pakistan, its manifesto, and its future.

Guftagu, a podcast in collaboration between the LSE SU Pakistan Society and the Beaver (LSE's student newspaper), focuses on issues related to South Asian social issues, culture, identity, and politics. Presented by Angbeen Abbas

Why We - Aurat - March 10/02/2020

Please read below regarding an initiative by Olivia Qasir, a History major from Pakistan, who is looking to raise funds for developing a documentary on the Aurat March (an annual march started in 2018 in Pakistan that advocates for women's rights):

I am a young woman from Lahore, Pakistan. The Women's March, known locally as the Aurat March (the word 'aurat' meaning 'woman' in Urdu), has inspired me to document this significant period in the history of the Women's Movement in Pakistan.

Since the first ever Aurat March took place in 2018, the movement has continued to grow. Hostility towards the marches is pervasive (the organisers continue to receive r**e and death threats), But these threats are met with the unwavering bravery and determination of the women campaigners.

This project is close to my heart having grown up in Lahore and witnessed this new form of activism. The Aurat March signifies a unique moment in Pakistan's history. By making this documentary my intention is not to vilify Pakistan to overseas audiences, but to highlight the country's progress, by filming the women taking it forward. This film also aims to dispel stereotypes of Pakistani women as helpless victims.

Your contributions will help this film portray the courage and resilience of Pakistani women.
