Our Story
Monkey Music has been running classes for babies and pre-schoolers for 25 years and we’re thrilled to be offering classes in Eltham and surrounding area now. We’re looking for new venues all the time, but currently you can find us in Westmount Road, Eltham, Under1Roof in Royal Arsenal Riverside and Shrewsbury House Community Centre near Shooters Hill. If you are looking for a fun, stimulating, and developmental activity for your baby or pre-schooler, then Monkey Music is the place for you. At Monkey Music we follow a progressive 4 stage curricula for children aged 3 months up to 4 years. Each level has been created and refined to support your child’s development and follows the Early Years Foundation Stages (EYFS) recommended for babies and for children attending nursery and pre-school. What’s it all about? Each 30 minute class is packed with musical activities, movement and singing using high quality musical instruments for the children to play designed especially for tiny hands, and sensory props and puppets to catch their imagination. We use fabulous percussion instruments including rainmakers, wind chimes, whistles and drums that will captivate the babies with their magical and fascinating sounds. Using our own original songs together with traditional nursery rhymes helps to provide familiarity for the children and the confidence to explore and develop throughout the classes. The progressive nature of our curricula and ability to move up through the learning stages is key to building the child’s confidence in exploring what music has to offer. Rock’n’Roll – for babies from 3months We provide a stimulating musical environment with gentle songs and fascinating sounds which provide the opportunity for you to share precious moments with your little one. All our instruments are safe for babies to touch and play and are cleaned thoroughly after each class. Heigh-Ho – for toddlers from 12 months This is more fast paced class as your babies are likely to be up on their feet, eager to explore! They learn to respond to the music they are hearing and find out how to make different sounds by copying the teacher whilst practising fine motor skills. Colourful props and themed classes catch their attention. All the while they are developing self-awareness and self-discipline together with listening skills. Jiggety-Jig – for 2 and 3 year olds By now, your little ones are likely to be more independent and want to play for themselves! We develop their sense of rhythm through dancing and singing in the class, playing with the percussion instruments and even composing for themselves. They learn important lessons about boundaries, sharing and also the social skills required for nursery or pre-school. Ding-Dong – for 3 and 4 year olds Now their ears are finely tuned, our little monkeys can also use their eyes to understand musical patterns, recognise written music and learn all about the instruments of the orchestra. Often children are also at a nursery or pre-school and these classes compliment all they are experiencing in those environments by following the Early Years Foundation Stages in our curriculum. Why Monkey Music? We are an established pre-school music group running for almost 25 years. The Monkey Music Curriculum is constantly developed, refined and updated, but most importantly, the 300+ original songs have been tried and tested on thousands of babies and children. The interactive classes and quality instruments engage the children in music making in a fun and sociable environment. They absorb so much without even realising they are learning. There are so many benefits of learning music as a baby and toddler and there are numerous studies into the effect this has on them. The action songs and rhymes build language and numerical skills; playing hand held instruments refine fine motor skills, and movement helps with spatial awareness. The curriculum for Monkey Music classes is developed with all these aspects in mind to help develop a child’s essential skills.
