In 2020 when Disney was aiming to cast a Black Mermaid for its live animation of the Little Mermaid. Fans went crazy, arguing that there could no such thing since the original Mermaid was red headed, Scandinavian and not black. An idea for an anthology on African Water Spirits had not too long formed in my head but this was motivation to get it done. We invited contributions from artists, writers, poets to what became In Search of Mami Water: Narratives and Images of African Water Spirits, essentially conveying the fact that water spirits are part of African creation myths as much as anywhere else. Where there are bodies of water that people need for survival some form of myths abound about water spirits. The book was the first hard back we did and in full colour, thanks to a Spread the Word grant. It was launched online, coming so close to the lock down period but also because it allowed us to welcome our contributors from across the African diaspora: US, Guyana, Africa. I'm looking forward to presenting this book, in the National Year of Reading and the Fulham Palace Museum as part of their Black History 365 and part of the African Odysseys 20th Anniversary. With several impressions of Yeye Osun, the presentation is also part of the 10th anniversary celebration of the Annual Osun River Ritual this year.
