AUSTRALIA TIGHTENS STUDENT VISA RULES
The new rules affect three major areas:
* Applying for another Student Visa from inside Australia
* Including or later adding family members
* Changing education providers
These changes are already in force from 2 October 2026.
For overseas students studying outside the school sector, the provider-transfer restriction has temporarily increased from:
6 months → 12 months
This means students generally cannot transfer to another education provider during the first 12 months of their principal course unless an applicable exception/release pathway applies.
The 12-month restriction applies until 30 June 2027.
From 1 July 2027, it is scheduled to return to 6 months.

Most Student Visa applicants can no longer include their partner or dependent children unless they qualify for an exemption.
The bigger change is this:
Once a Student Visa has been granted, family members can no longer be added later as “subsequent entrants”.
Limited exemptions for including family at the initial application stage still exist for certain categories such as PhD students, some government-sponsored students and eligible Pacific/ASEAN students.
Most current Student Visa holders who want to apply for another Student Visa can no longer lodge the application from inside Australia.
