Reading Recovery Europe Reading Recovery Europe has responsibility for monitoring and maintaining the quality and integrity of Reading Recovery across Europe.

Reading Recovery programme is an effective school-based literacy intervention for five or six-year-olds who are the lowest attaining in reading and writing. It enables these pupils to catch up with their classroom peers and reach age-expected levels within 20 weeks. Reading Recovery Europe (RRE) has responsibility for monitoring and maintaining the quality and integrity of Reading Recovery across Europe. We promote Reading Recovery and the high quality professional learning for teachers it provides that enable all children to achieve excellence in literacy.

As we celebrate the end of another year, our Reading Recovery IPD and CPD teachers from East Renfrewshire and East Dunbartonshire came together to reflect on their greatest successes and challenges.

Sharing stories of children and cohorts who have shaped their practice, colleagues made connections to research and Literacy Lessons that supported their professional growth. A powerful reminder of the value of reflection, collaboration and the impact of our work.

Watching Young Writers Grow
In January: “I love my mum.”
By March: “Yesterday my tooth got stuck on a marshmallow and it fell off.”
In just a few weeks, this young writer has moved from a simple sentence to a detailed recount—showing growing phonemic awareness, independence, and confidence.

Celebrating Reading Recovery in a bilingual world 📚✨
We were delighted to mark the launch of Reading Recovery in a Bilingual Context – The Case of Malta.
This important new publication, developed by the National Literacy Agency in Malta, showcases the impact of Reading Recovery in supporting young learners—particularly in bilingual and disadvantaged contexts. The book highlights how expert teaching, personalised intervention, and culturally responsive practice can transform children’s literacy journeys.
A special moment at our recent Teacher Leader Development Meeting at the Marino Institute of Education in Dublin was the presentation of the book by Mr David Muscat of the National Literacy Agency in Malta to Dr Sue Bodman, continuing international collaboration that strengthens Reading Recovery worldwide.
👏 Congratulations to all involved, especially the Teacher Leaders whose research underpins this work.
