β How CSWs can work effectively with a D/deaf clientβ ( CSW Awareness Theory)
Often, new CSWs do not have experience of working with D/deaf people and using the phone while translating English to BSL and vice versa.
If you are a CSW, you should to try to calibrate your mind, thinking in both languages that are being used. It takes practice!
Here is an example how to work through the phone.
You can see two different ways to communicate through the phone. The first is the wrong way and the second is the right way.
We hope this video is helpful for you! Thank you for watching our video!

Many hearing people are unaware that Deaf people communicate in different ways, including through speech, lip-reading, written English, and sign language. Communication barriers can often lead to frustration and misunderstandings between Deaf and hearing communities.
In the UK, many Deaf people use British Sign Language (BSL) as their first or preferred language. Learning even a little BSL can help create a more inclusive, accessible, and connected community for everyone.
