Philosophy, as Spinoza understands it, is the art of learning to live as joyfully and securely as we can. But because we can only practice this art collectively, philosophising is always a partly political project - a matter of learning to live together peacefully and harmoniously. What enables us to do this?

The Department of Philosophy, Birkbeck, is delighted to announce that Dr Stacie Friend has just been appointed joint editor of the journal Analysis from September 2021, along with Dr David Liggins (Manchester) and Dr Lee Walters (Southampton). Analysis, which was founded in 1933, is the most established and esteemed journal for short papers in philosophy.
