Our camp wrapped up just like the story, with beautiful butterflies taking flight! Learners created butterfly crafts, engaged in visual performance tasks, and watched butterflies flutter outside, with a little help from the parachute.
We added the final touches to each learner’s personal storybook, capturing all the memorable moments from camp and telling the story of the very hungry caterpillar. It was a fantastic wrap-up for everyone—staff, volunteers, and learners alike. A perfect ending to a wonderful summer camp!
If you missed out on the Carbone Clinic camp and want to try these activities out at home contact us on [email protected] to request the natural environment teaching plans.

Motivation is essential for encouraging communication, increasing language use, enhancing engagement, supporting skill development, building independence, and promoting social interaction. Motivating activities create opportunities for learners to practice manding by linking communication to meaningful outcomes.
Our summer camp fun continued with the caterpillar building a cosy cocoon! Inspired by this favourite activity from Camp 2023, we made chocolate Krispy cakes to create our own cocoons, crafted handprint caterpillars, and even used the parachute to build cocoons.
Parachute games are a fantastic way to boost social skills, as more children playing together makes the parachute rise higher, adding to the fun and providing opportunities for pairing and interacting with peers. Each activity was also filled with chances to practice manding, making communication both enjoyable and effective.
Stay tuned for more highlights, and if you'd like to try these activities at home, check back to see how you can receive our NET plans!

"Out popped a tiny but very hungry caterpillar" who spent the week munching his way through a variety of foods. This fun theme inspired a variety of activities, like an outdoor food hunt with picture matching, making fruit pizzas, fruit printing, and feeding our caterpillar tunnel!
Each activity was designed to encourage our learners to practice the important skill of making requests (manding) and BCBA’s and ABA Coaches were on hand to supervise throughout the activities.
Teaching manding empowers learners by giving them the ability to express their needs, which reduces frustration and enhances social interactions. It helps build foundational communication skills, often leading to fewer behavioural challenges and increased motivation to communicate. Whether asking for ingredients during the fruit pizza-making or selecting fruits and paint for fruit printing, these moments were key for developing communication skills.
Stay tuned later this week for how to get copies of our NET plans and bring these language-rich activities home!

As we gear up for the return to school, let's take a moment to reflect on our summer adventures! What fun activities did you enjoy the most? Did you discover any new skills or make exciting memories?
The Carbone Clinic camp was filled with engaging activities inspired by "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," where learners dove into a world of fun and language-building opportunities. If you missed out but want to see all the excitement, check out our daily highlights this week!
The story begins with an "egg on the leaf," which was the theme that kicked off camp. From parachute games to forest school, science and crafts our learners practiced making requests and interacting during activities. A perfect blend of learning to communicate through play set the tone for the entire camp.
Let’s carry that camp spirit into the new school year!

Thank you to our incredible team and volunteers for making Carbone Clinic Summer Camp truly exceptional. Your dedication and enthusiasm turned every activity into a meaningful learning experience. With skilled instruction, fun, care, and a strong sense of community, you transformed this camp from a series of events into a summer camp filled with smiles, laughter, and meaningful learning opportunities.
B.F. Skinner said, “We shouldn't teach great books; we should teach a love of reading.”
Skilled instructors and dedicated volunteers embodied this by immersing learners in Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Through creative and inspiring activities, with numerous occasions to capture and contrive learning opportunities, the team helped learners explore this story and craft their own books, bringing the narrative to life.
Curious about how the activities unfolded and how the book was brought to life? Check back soon!
Thank you everyone for making this a camp to remember!
