If your child has SEND and isn’t toilet trained yet, this is for you
Schools CANNOT refuse a child or expect them to be toilet trained if they have additional needs.
Toileting is developmental — and for many children with SEND, it takes longer. That’s not a failure, it’s a need.
What schools SHOULD be doing:
✨ Having an intimate care policy in place
✨ Creating an individual care plan for your child
✨ Providing a safe, private space for changing
✨ Ensuring trained staff are available
✨ Supporting your child with dignity and respect
What is NOT okay:
❌ Asking you to come in to change your child
❌ Saying they can’t attend unless toilet trained
❌ Reducing hours because of toileting needs
❌ Treating it as “bad behaviour”
You are allowed to advocate for your child.
You are allowed to ask for the right support.
And your child deserves to feel safe, included and respected at school 🤍

✨ Nervous
✨ Unsure
✨ Overwhelmed
And that’s completely normal.
If your child has additional needs, this transition can feel even bigger — but with the right support in place, it can be a positive experience 💛
I’ll be sharing lots of tips over the next few weeks to help make things feel a little easier.
