Here's a clip from a slightly longer interview explaining my Culpeper mural on Puma Court in Shoreditch. More on that here: https://arthoppers.co.uk/project/culpeper-mural/
I loved diving into the research around Culpeper's translation of the London Pharmacopoeia (not 'pharmacia' as I mistakenly blunder🤦♀️ ha!). The London Pharmacopoeia was a legal document published in 1618 by The Royal College of Physicians. Written in Latin, it listed the official compendium of drugs which apothecary's could use and provided a strict code of conduct for physicians in the methods by which medicine should be dispensed.
Culpeper’s unauthorised English translation broadened public access to the knowledge of health remedies. It says a lot about who he was and his social values. As you might imagine, this didn't go down well amongst the medical profession.
I had a lot of fun making this design. The ideas fell into place with a play on the astrological values that Culpeper assigns to plants.
Big thanks again to all at Global Street Art and Essential Living for trusting in my work and supporting this project 😊 ✨

I’m excited to reveal a new painting in Shoreditch!
👉 The Culpeper Mural
Huge thanks to Global Street Art and for trusting me with the design and painting of this new work!
This beautiful building on Puma Court in the heart of Shoreditch lends itself to the story of an iconic resident from our past...
Revolutionary herbalist Nicholas Culpeper lived in Red Lion House during the early 17th century, which would have stood in roughly this spot.

Culpeper Mural - Art Hoppers The mural takes inspiration from the life of herbalist Nicholas Culpeper. Culpeper lived in Red Lion House during the early 17th century which would have stood in approximately the location of the mural. The house was demolished in the 1840's to make way for the widening of what is now…

Our latest exhibition 'That's Me!' is now open! Years 5 and 6 are represented by their names, hand-crafted in paper and illuminated. Presented as a collective, the work celebrates the bonds formed through friendship, school and neighbourhood. The work shines a light on each individual and reminds us that every name carries the chronicles of its bearer. 147 names, 147 stories.
Some of those stories are shared through an accompanying soundtrack as various children from the cohort speak about the meaning, the family ties to, or the adventures from which their name originated.
In the classroom, we showed children how to design their own font spelling out the letters of their name in upper case. The negative space around the letters was cut out from heavyweight cartridge paper using a craft knife resulting in 147 stencils of each child's name.
We then puzzled the papercuts together creating fours sides of a cube. Each side represents a different year 5 or year 6 class. The names of 5/6D can be found in the bottom two rows of all four sides.
Our light installation is inspired by an artwork called ‘Intersections’ created by artist This work reflects the intricate patterns found in the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. Anila describes The Alhambra as a metaphor of union, a powerful symbol in which the fusion of cultures is visible through design. THANKYOU Anila for your beautiful art and inspiration!

Clapton Park Mural .official - Here it is completed, a new painting lining the public footpath and bridge to Hackney Marshes from Daubeney Road.
This was a total joy to paint in the September sunshine. The theme of the mural is a meadow inspired by – an ambitious initiative to create a flower-rich green corridor linking Hackney’s parks, supporting biodiversity, and encouraging people to connect with nature.
The design includes the Common Blue and Painted Lady butterflies, a Jersey Tiger moth plus a White-Tailed Bumblebee. These pollinators busy themselves amongst white and pink clover, dandelions, cornflower, knapweed, poppies and various grasses seen through painterly expressions of colour and texture.
The design sample was created using pencil crayons and it’s from this drawing that the painted work sprung into life - Hop over to the website to see more:

Here's the team behind the mural including the driving force - that's the folks from the local community along with Olu representing the CGS team - Cleaner, Greener, Safer programme which funded the project from London Borough of Southwark

Working alongside these folks for the last 6 months has been a total joy. Ideas were discussed, experience shared and bonds formed. It's one of the reasons I love working with communities. The journey is always an adventure and the outcome so rewarding.
Here's a couple of comments from visitors to the garden about the mural which just sum up what happens when people with ideas get together and make things happen:
"The mural is a beautiful sign, not just in itself but of the energy and effort and passion and enthusiasm that Aline and Maud and all the other people have put in to making this whole place more beautiful. Well done."
"It's a really special thing in a really special place, I think it adds an extra little bit of heart to this wonderful community garden. It's amazing everything they've done here, I hope more spaces do similar things."

What an amazing response to the mural particularly over on Instagram () where it's mananged to reach so many - THANK YOU for your positive comments and support, it's so exciting to hear what you think about the design and I'm so pleased that the mural is connecting with people. Such a boost, thank you!
Presenting more beautiful photos by Pau Ros photography, here's a few close ups of the details.
Rooted within the northern end of the community garden, the mural design celebrates the awe inspiring power of nature and the positive impact of its presence in city life. The design includes botanicals at various points of the life cycle, observing the seasons, the beauty in the various stages of growth and the value of time, change and renewal.
Rose-hip, chamomile and poppy seed speak of the plants which provide remedy and nutrition. Dried hydrangea leaves and petals plus the whimsical green viburnum add texture and structure to the design. The blue Hare's foot inkcap mushrooms whose evanescent life cycle is a rare sight due to its rapid progress are the centre piece of the work overlooked by a regular visitor to the garden, lovely robin red breast.
Huge thanks again to UAL: University of the Arts London Camberwell students Emily Bromage, Merryn Young and Nohana Sayama for assisting with the painting. It was super fun working on this together!

I'm so excited to share these beautiful photos of the completed mural! Thank you
The scaffold came down over the bank holiday weekend. It's been an incredibly rewarding experience working on this project! I've had so many positive conversations with locals during the painting of the mural - A BIG THANK YOU to the local community who have been a great support throughout!!
I was a little emotional when the scaffold came down, it felt a bit overwhelming but I'm so so happy with the result and really pleased to now be able to share the completed design with you all.
Huge thanks to students and for assisting with the painting. It was super fun working on this together!

will be naked, Yes. Fully exposed! from next Saturday 3 May when the scaffold comes down. 🫣 I CAN NOT WAIT 😃
We started painting on 24 March and the sun has been out almost every day since. It’s been a total joy to paint!! Thanks to Camberwell students and for assisting with painting 🙌
There’s lots of visual elements to the design which celebrate the changing seasons and life cycles in the garden. This dying chamomile is a favourite for its less flamboyant moment. The heavy flower heads are so beautiful in their somber state - or perhaps I’m just relating after a month of painting 🤦♀️😂…
Anyway, I’ll be very happy to share the full mural in the coming week or so.
The local community are organising a party from 4pm on Saturday 10th May to officially celebrate the completion of the mural which now clearly sign posts their gorgeous and hard working communal garden in its peaceful corner of Peckham. If you’d like to visit, see the mural and meet the lovely people who collectively set about making this project happen with the support of - Sat 10th May at 4pm would be a great time to do that. DM me for details.❤️

Mural progress… almost there!
Been working from the top down on either side of the wall. I’ve reached the first elevation on both sides and then it’s ground level across both. Here’s some images of various finished elements plus the mess in the process of a wash experiment! 🎨 🖌️ 🪣 😂
The mural design is based on a watercolour and one particular area needed textural stains so I’ve been sploshing the paint on 🤪.
Probably looks ridiculous from the street - passers by are curious … or maybe they’re concerned… 😂 what about the drips? - see the last two images of the mess - 😳It’s a reminder for me to trust in the process. The texture that I’m aiming for will be cut into a shape and framed with sharp edges. No fear. Hold tight. All will work out! 🤞💪
