The JRC is the forum for Japan-related research activities at SOAS, University of London

The principal role of the Centre is to promote, coordinate and disseminate information relating to, the academic study of Japan across the disciplines and to act as a resource for academic, governmental, non-governmental and business constituencies with an interest in Japan. It does so through the research and publications of its staff, new teaching programmes, an established seminar series and special events.

Be sure to attend the hybrid lecture on the renowned Japanese textile artist Serizawa Keisuke and his fascinating artistic journey within the Mingei movement, organised by Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures on 21 March 2024 at 6pm (GMT)!

[ ✨Third Thursday Lecture - ‘Ehon Don Kihōte’: The precursor of the Serizawa books 📖]

Join us for an enlightening talk by our current Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellow, Dr. Rosanna Rios Perez, on the renowned Japanese textile artist Serizawa Keisuke and his fascinating artistic journey within the Mingei movement.

The focus will be on ‘Ehon Don Kihōte’, first commissioned by Carl Tilden Keller in 1935, and its later 1976 edition, ‘Shinpan Ehon Don Kihōte’. Dr. Rios Perez will explore the context of these books within the framework of Mingei ideals and Serizawa's personal artistic growth.

Ambassador's Commendation awarded to Dr Helen Macnaughtan 24/05/2023

SOAS senior lecturer Dr Helen Macnaughtan has been presented with the Ambassador’s Commendation by Mr Hayashi Hajime, Ambassador of Japan to the United Kingdom, in recognition of her 'distinguished service' in contributing to the "deepening of mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the United Kingdom".

Ambassador's Commendation awarded to Dr Helen Macnaughtan Supported by the Toshiba International Foundation since 2017, this final event in the series was hosted by the Japan Research Centre in the Khalili Lecture Theatre.
