Yesterday, I had the privilege of serving as a judge for the First Lego League competition at the University of Greenwich. I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and creativity from the young teams who were participating in the competition. They shared various novel solutions to the global energy crisis and fresh perspectives on how to use renewable sources.

Seeing the teams put their robot design and coding skills to use in such an impressive way was especially inspiring. It reminded us of the incredible wealth of knowledge that young people have to offer in coming up with solutions to the most pressing problems of our time.

The judging process was far from easy! All teams did very well, and it was highly difficult to select the champion who would go on to the finals.

One category that particularly affected us was the Mentor/Coach Award. This award was presented to the team's mentor who had been the most supportive. The testimony that many of the teams proclaimed in describing this person's positive impact on their lives was absolutely heartwarming. One team's inscription that stood out to us spoke of how the coach/mentor had "treated them as an individual, not a statistic," and it struck a chord with all of us in the judging room.

After the event, I left the venue truly inspired by the dedication and drive of the participating students. I was reminded of Maya Angelou's timeless quote: "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel".

As we move forward into the week, let us all strive to treat one another as individuals, rather than mere statistics, and take the time to express our appreciation for those around us who have provided support and guidance.

This week I had the incredible opportunity to speak at Waldegrave School on my career journey as an engineer alongside phenomenal engineering colleagues in different fields, all ambassadors of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering. We shared our different engineering paths and how engineering is advancing and impacting our current society. My closing remark to the students - The World Needs You! you can use your abilities, skills, passions, and hobbies to make a valuable difference. We need more engineers to develop innovative solutions to some of the pressing challenges faced by humanity today to sustain our collective existence.
