"Greater Depth" means scoring above 110 in SATs. Achieving it in reading, writing and maths puts a child in the top 8% nationally.

It’s a huge achievement — and while it’s never too late to turn things around, starting early gives children the best chance to shine. 🌟

This is some homework help I gave to a student who couldn't make it to her lesson. It is Year 6 level but it has some easier questions and many of the principles also apply to children studying maths at secondary school. My approach to using diagrams of fractions might save some of you a lot of anxiety. No doubt you've been taught procedures to solving maths problems but diagrams can help you reason with fractions because they're visual. In fact, when it's drawn the answer is usually obvious!

If your child is taking the 11+ exam this month, here is some last minute advice that can secure them those essential extra marks.

Read the questions aloud - this will help your brain hold & manipulate more information.

Be deductive - on multiple choice questions, cross-out wrong answers rather than looking for the right answer. You have a little psychological win every time a wrong answer is removed.

Breathe - slowing your breathing clears your thinking. It stops your sympathetic nervous system taking over, causing panic and clouding judgement.

Watch the clock - don’t struggle for too long on one question. Accept it, move on & come back to it later.

Don’t leave any question unanswered - if you don’t know, a guessed answer is better than no answer. If you've used deduction already, you would have reduced the options and given yourself a better chance.

Have you received your child's end of year report and it says all is well but you have a feeling that your child is struggling?

Get a free consultation with me to assess your child's actual attainment and what their next steps are.

Based in Walthamstow, I tutor primary school children in reading, writing, maths and eleven plus.

I have found that groups of 3 provide the best balance between a collaborative, motivating environment (think going for a run with a group as opposed to by yourself) and me being able to give verbal feedback in the moment (proven to be the most effective feedback).

Sessions last an hour, homework is given every week and you have peace of mind for £25.

If you think this service could help your child whatsapp me on 07540 775333

How do you relate fractions to percentages?

Most children understand that when a battery is at 100%, it is full and the opposite is true when the battery is at 0%.

Many symbols for phone batteries are in essence bar models. 5/5 shows 5 spaces, each full with a bar. 3/5 shows 5 spaces with three of them full. Nb: It is often best to phrase it as 3 out of 5 (rather than 3 fifths.)

With the correlating percentage below, it is possible for the child to SEE that 3/5 is the same thing as 60%.

This is a concept leap and thus some children will understand it instantly, while for others, it will take time for their mind to accept it.

The phone battery visual will help them to 'see' the concept rather than just trying to make sense of an abstract sentence like
3/5 = 60%.
