If the email from the local authority did not name your preferred primary school today, your first step is to accept the place - no matter how tempting it is to return the form with ‘Over my dead body’ scrawled on it.

‘The local authority is not obligated to offer you another, so you must accept the place first,’ Melanie Sanderson explained on ITV News yesterday. ‘Go on the waiting list for the schools you do want; families move, things change, and you may yet be offered your preferred school.’

With headlines growing more troubling, the way we speak to our children about current affairs matters more than ever. Nicky Cox, editor of First News advises that if children come home with questions, it's best to answer them honestly:

"It's important that from a very early age, children are aware of what's going on - and that should be coming from home."

The primary school application deadline is a week away and our advice is simple; don't leave it to chance.

When we asked 2,000 parents of school aged children for their experience of choosing a school, almost a third said they worry their child won't fit in or be happy at the school they've chosen.

If you list only your preferred schools and leave choice slots blank, you risk missing out on all of them and being allocated a poorly performing, undersubscribed school two miles away.
