It’s that time of year again - we’re excited to announce the arrival of the LCC Shows 2023!
This year, our graduating students have developed work that navigates challenging spaces on both literal and metaphorical levels – not only reflecting the unique opportunities posed by non-linear exhibition spaces, but also the transitional space between graduation and the next stage of their creative journeys.
Select courses will be taking part in our onsite exhibitions, which will be split into 2 shows across May and June:
✨ Show One – Media: 25 – 27 and 30 May
✨ Show Two – Design and Screen: 14-17 June
The LCC Shows 2023 identity has been designed by Kaam Kaaj, a multi-disciplinary creative studio based in London. BA (Hons) Graphic and Media Design grad Mohammad Samad founded the trio and Joanna Domagalska (also an LCC grad) and Bouk Ra complete the team.

Peter Dragsbæk is always by the sea. He is one of the last fishermen in surfing-obsessed Klitmøller, a small town on the northwest coast of Denmark. Dragsbæk’s love for the sea permeates his life. When asked about what fishing means to him, he often leans back and wistfully says, “I can’t describe it.” Klitmøller has been a fishing town for generations, but when windsurfers started moving to the town in the mid-1980s, its identity began to change. Now, the population has nearly doubled, while only a handful of fishermen have remained. Dragsbæk welcomes the influx of visitors and respects the surfers’ love of the sea, but recognizes that he may be one of the last to cast off from the beach that’s now packed with surfers.
The full video will be published shortly on cpoy.org.

Repost from
Last Saturday, 3 December, we spoke with students, graduates and academics at UAL to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities:
One of the projects we wanted to spotlight is by BA Advertising graduates Ella Plank (.ella), Michelle Wang () and Rachel Yan (.rachel) called 'BSL To Go': a campaign focusing on BSL’s recognition as an official language in the UK.
"As an invisible disability, deafness is a condition often unnoticed and overlooked for social support, creating many challenges and hardships in the lives of those who are hearing impaired," they explain.
The campaign aims to raise awareness and create a culture of inclusivity for the deaf community.

Third year BA (Hons) Illustration and Visual Media student, Davinia Clarke recently entered and won a design commission competition run by Natixis Investment Managers to create an artwork that celebrates Black history and culture as part of their celebration of Black History Month 2022.
For the Natixis brief Davinia wanted to explore social and community contexts. She chose three words to focus her submission on; community, support, and growth. Davinia explains ‘Black culture and history means to me endless learning and abundance of stories. The watering can featured across all three art pieces reflects the act of nurturing your community’
Davinia’s artwork is being unveiled and permanently displayed in the Natixis IM UK office today – massive congratulations Davinia!

We’d like to introduce The Elephant Recovery Project, an incredible initiative supported by Southwark Council’s Highstreet Recovery Fund and in partnership with UAL graduates. It aims to provide support to small independent traders in the Elephant and Castle area.
Members of the Elephant and Castle Business Forum expressed an interest in developing a new visual identity for the area, that would celebrate and reflect its unique culture, character and history, and encourage trade for local businesses.
We selected 6 UAL grads skilled in graphic design, visual identity and branding to work in teams of 2 and develop unique visual identity concepts for the area. Over a 2-week period the teams developed concepts based on extensive research about the area. By engaging with and listening to key stakeholders and business owners, they created final concepts that capture the vibrant character of Elephant and Castle – in surprising, unique and eye-catching ways.
Image 1: The Star of South London by Edgar Ocampo-Pazmino and Fly Chan
Image 2: Come as a stranger leave as a friend by Rita Buiça and Sara Zolli
Image 3: Building connections, living culture by Andreea Stan and Margarida Peixoto
Members of the public and the local community are invited to vote for their favourite of the final three visual identity concepts.
Voting opens today and closes on Sunday 7 August.
Follow the link to the Urban Elephant Festival site find out more about the project and cast your vote!

Please note that the concepts are proposals and may not necessarily be activated in the area.

As more of us than ever turn our focus to the importance of sustainability, considering how we can reform and rethink our daily lives in more responsible ways is vital for ensuring the survival of our planet.
Recently, our Events and Exhibitions team had the opportunity to collaborate with leading design agency on a project that brings together climate conscious design and accessibility.
Working with digital agency Mallard & Claret and a number of emerging creatives from LCC, OPX aimed to develop a digital exhibitions microsite that could deliver a rich cultural experience with low environmental impact while continually evolving based on a growing range of exhibited work and user feedback.
Without Form Space, is a platform which not only enables audiences across the globe to explore work produced by students at the College, but also encourages users to feel more educated about the impact of their browsing decisions and prompts them to develop more mindful habits.
We recently caught up with the OPX team to discuss the creative process behind the microsite development.

A Place in Limbo / 禹步 is an experimental short film by MA Design for Art Direction graduate, Sarah Wong. The film explores the feeling of being lost and the journey of finding oneself. And asks the questions: Where is home, when we feel lost? Which path is the right one, when we cannot change who we are?
Sarah invites the viewer to reflect on how our physical environment, our outer world, influences us and makes our inner world react. We have no control over how our outer world moves, we do have an influence on how we react from within our spiritual and mental sense.
As a q***r, immigrant child, Sarah uses her perspective to visualise the transcendent notion of a home. Finding a home, in this sense, does not mean finding a physical place but rather a spiritual place where the body reaches a state of mind where the soul sees and accepts itself as one in relation to the physical environment and its true nature.
You can explore more of Sarah's final project and other LCC Graduate work, through the UAL Graduate Showcase Platform here: https://graduateshowcase.arts.ac.uk/projects/304268/cover

From everyone at LCC, we wish you a relaxing and enjoyable winter break. Stay safe and enjoy your well-deserved downtime, we can’t wait to welcome you back in 2022!

London College of Communication graduate, Yoni Alter has been commissioned to create a brand-new digital artwork to cover the tallest LED Christmas tree in London.
The commission is part of Winterfest at Wembley Park, a free, open-air light trail of new light and art installations. This year’s theme is ‘Reunited in Light’.
Yoni’s work, titled City Lights, includes a 25-metre-high walk-through tree made up of 100,000 kinetic lights which pulse to different rhythms and evoke the spirit and pace of a cityscape.
Yoni’s bright works move between the artistic and the commercial, between the figurative and the abstract, and between form and space. Originally studying art and design in Jerusalem, he went on to complete his MA in Graphic Design at LCC in 2007.

Film by the talented team at Grey Moth.
LCC BA (Hons) Photography graduate, Renee Maria Osubu’s short film Dear Philadelphia has qualified for 94th Academy Awards.
Demonstrating the power of still and moving image, Renee’s celebrated project began as a photographic series before translating into a short film released in 2020. With a focus on the stories of 3 African American fathers, the project considers the intimate truths of life in an often-demonised neighbourhood in North Philadelphia through 3 key lenses of family, friends and faith.
Charting the stories of Josh, Mel and Dot as both individuals and threads within the wider narratives of their community, Dear Philadelphia aims to remind audiences of the hope, beauty and strength that can be found in all things, along with the poignancy of humanity beyond social prejudice or assumption.
Having received critical acclaim from leading organisations including BlackStar Film Festival (where it was named winner of the Vimeo Staff Pick Award), Denver International Film Festival (where it was nominated for Best Short Film), and Sundance Film Festival (where it was nominated for the Short Film Grand Jury Prize), Renee's film continues to make a profound impact on the broader cultural landscape after qualifying for the 94th Academy Awards, which will take place in February 2022.
We caught up with Renee to discuss how her creative practice has developed since her time at LCC, and her approach to exploring the values of love and community that underpin her work.
