Today’s announcement of a social media ban for under-16s is a welcome first step.

At Waldorf UK, we believe equally important is the timing and preparation of young people going online. Our schools have long taken a developmentally informed approach to digital technology, with no screens or personal digital devices throughout early years and primary education, and technology introduced more gradually and critically from secondary school onwards.

We believe stronger protections are needed, but that restrictions alone are unlikely to be enough. Children and young people also need the skills, maturity and understanding to engage with technology safely, confidently and responsibly throughout their lives.

We have shared this view in our submission to the Government’s Growing Up in the Online World consultation.

It was a pleasure to recently visit Holywood Steiner School in Northern Ireland.

Spending time in member schools is an important part of Waldorf UK’s work. It helps us stay connected to the schools and communities we represent, and gives us the opportunity to see Waldorf education in practice across different settings.

Visits like this also help keep our work informed by the day-to-day life of our member schools and the children, staff and families at the heart of them.

Thank you to Holywood Steiner School for the warm welcome, and congratulations on your 50th Anniversary!

🌍 World Environment Day is a good opportunity to reflect on how children learn about the natural world.

At Waldorf schools, children experience nature directly from early childhood - through outdoor play, gardening, growing food, farming and festivals that celebrate the changing seasons, nature studies and environmental and ecological projects.

Through these experiences, they develop a love of nature, an understanding of how natural systems work and a sense of responsibility for the world around them. Children are most likely to learn to protect what they know, understand and love.

This strand of learning is a core part of a Waldorf interdisciplinary curriculum that gives children the chance to experience nature as well as study it in the classroom.

🌍 We were proud to see Waldorf UK represented in Paris last Friday at a meeting with on the future of education.

Kath Bransby, Waldorf UK’s Education Coordinator, attended in her role on the board of ECSWE, the European Council for Steiner Waldorf Education, and spoke to the group on the common core curriculum framework.

Moments like these reflect Waldorf UK’s connection to a wider European movement and the role Steiner Waldorf education continues to play in important conversations about childhood, curriculum and the future of education.
