You and 40 other students are part of a company competing for a lucrative contract to build a new settlement in space. You have a day to organise your departments, come up with a realistic design and prepare a presentation for the judges. The chance to represent your country in the International Space Settlement Design Competition, held at a NASA Space Center in America. The UK Space Design Competition, run by the Space Science & Engineering Foundation, sees almost 200 students students from around the country working together to design settlements in space for up to 10,000 inhabitants. The competition aims to promote scientific thinking, effective project management, team work, and communication. School teams initially submit video presentations online, and the best of those compete first in regional heats and then national finals. Selected members of the winning team are then invited to represent the UK at the international final at a NASA Space Center. The competition is made possible through the generous support of the UK Space Agency, Imperial College London, the Exilarch's Foundation, the Astrobiology Society of Britain, and the Royal Academy of Engineering.
