Before you correct your child’s writing, connect with them first. 💛✍️

One simple trick can make boring writing come alive. ✍️✨

Does your child write sentences like:

The park was windy.

There’s nothing wrong with it—but it tells the reader what happened.

Now try:

The wind howled through the trees, making the leaves dance wildly.

Suddenly, the reader can see, hear and feel the scene.

The trick? SHOW, DON'T JUST TELL.

Encourage your young writer to use their 5 senses:

👀 SEE — What can the character see?
👂 HEAR — What sounds surround them?
✋ FEEL — What can they feel?
👃 SMELL — What scents are in the air?
👅 TASTE — What flavours can they experience?

The more purposeful detail a child adds, the more their reader can see, feel and imagine the story.

And remember: great writing isn't about using complicated words just to sound clever.

It's about helping the reader experience the moment.

Small word choices can make a BIG difference. ✍️
Instead of using “said” again and again, young writers can choose words that show how a character is speaking and bring their stories to life.

Try these 3 powerful alternatives:
💬 Whispered — when someone speaks softly
💥 Exclaimed — when someone speaks with strong emotion

💭 Replied — when someone answers
Strong writing is not about using complicated words everywhere. It’s about choosing the right word for the right moment.

When a young writer feels stuck, they often don’t need more pressure — they need the right spark, structure and encouragement to get their ideas moving.
Instead of saying “just write something”, try asking:
💡 What would you like to write about?
📝 Shall we brainstorm some ideas together?
🌱 What’s one sentence you could start with?
❤️ You don’t have to write perfectly. Just begin.

Because writing is a journey, not a race.
