How good are your decisions when the pressure really goes up?

I’ve decided to do something a little different with my next series of blogs and draw more on my years in the RAF.

When I was in uniform I spent many years controlling fast jet aircraft safely whilst they carried out their operational role.

It certainly taught me a lot about making decisions when you don’t have all the information, communicating clearly and, importantly, learning to manage yourself when the pressure increases.

So now years later, I see many of the same human behaviours when I’m working with leaders and managers. Obviously a very different environment, but perhaps the human being under pressure isn’t that different after all.

How often do managers say they are coaching when they are actually giving advice?

Real coaching is a practical leadership skill. It means knowing when to listen, when to challenge and how to ask questions that help people think for themselves.

From 19–23 October, I will be delivering our five-day Master Coaching Skills programme in London, specifically for managers and leaders.

This is an ILM Recognised Programme that is practical, challenging and limited to a small group. Everyone has plenty of opportunity to practise, receive feedback and develop coaching skills they can use immediately, not simply learn another model.

As an Executive coach with an MSc in Executive Coaching, a postgraduate qualification in Coaching Supervision and EMCC Global accreditation as a Coaching Supervisor, I also provide a full year of coaching supervision following the programme.

Because learning the skills is only the beginning. Applying them confidently back in the workplace is what really matters.

🥱 Another day. Another slide show. Another room slowly switching off.

Let’s be honest. Too much training still hides behind PowerPoint.

With 39 percent of learning fully face to face and 50 percent blended, it is fair to estimate that 30 to 45 percent of sessions still rely heavily on slides.

Now pause for a second.
Imagine how many people will experience this today.

That's not development. That is information dumping.

If you need 60 slides to hold attention, the issue is not the audience.

It is the approach.
