🔊 The plumbing skills shortage is getting the national attention it deserves 📻

This morning, BBC Radio 4’s Today programme profiled the growing skills shortages facing the plumbing, heating and ventilation industry - an issue JTL has been highlighting in our new report 🔗https://jtltraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/JTL-Plumbing-Report-071026.pdf

The programme spoke to Alfie Johnson, a JTL Plumbing apprentice, about his experience of accessing an apprenticeship and the opportunities available to people looking to build a career in the trades.

It was also valuable to hear Mark Reynolds, Co-Chair of the Construction Leadership Council, echo the challenges facing our industry and the urgent need to address the skills gap with support for employers.

The message is clear: we need to do more to attract, train and retain the skilled people our industry needs for the future.

Apprenticeships have a vital role to play - providing people with the practical skills, knowledge and experience to build rewarding careers, while helping employers develop the talent they need.

At JTL, we’re proud to be playing our part. But tackling the skills shortage will require collaboration across industry, education and government.

⚠ The UK's plumbing, heating and ventilation workforce is facing a significant skills challenge ⚠

Employers and industry are repeatedly signalling concern over acute workforce and skills shortages.

The latest report from JTL reveals that without urgent action, the plumbing workforce is projected to fall from 137,800 today to around 96,900 by 2039, a decline of approximately 30%.

This has already fallen by 16% since 2018, while demand continues to grow from housebuilding, clean energy projects, new infrastructure, and data centre developments.

Apprenticeships remain the industry's gold-standard route into skilled employment, but apprenticeship completions are around half the level seen a decade ago.

Using research from JTL’s pioneering workforce projection model - the first of its kind for the plumbing industry - the report sets out the scale of the challenge and identifies practical steps government, employers and training providers can take to strengthen the workforce pipeline and support future economic growth.

🧠 October is ADHD Awareness Month

Everyone has their own strengths, experiences and ways of learning - and understanding ADHD is an important part of creating an apprenticeship environment where everyone can thrive.

At JTL, we’re committed to supporting our learners as individuals. For apprentices with ADHD, the right understanding, encouragement and support can make a real difference to their experience, confidence and progress.

This month, we’re encouraging everyone to learn more about ADHD, challenge misconceptions and have open conversations about neurodiversity. By listening and recognising that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to learning, we can help create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to reach their potential.

💬 Let’s keep learning, listening and supporting one another.
