This Week at The Ahoy Centre ⚓
On The Right Tack continued their RYA Sailing Stage 1 this week, getting out on the water with Alfie in one of our keelboats.
Sailability managed to dodge the wind earlier in the week and supported the team with boat and site maintenance — thank you team!
Oak Gardens School enjoyed two days of pretty good weather while completing our Sailing For All programme. Sixteen young people walked up the slipway this afternoon proudly holding their shiny new RYA Stage 1 Sailing Certificates. Congratulations everyone — it was a pleasure to have you with us!
The flooring in the hall has been pulled up in preparation for the brand-new flooring to be laid — it’s going to look fantastic!
The PLA have also started laying eight new moorings for the centre. These will replace some of our current moorings and add additional capacity, making life much easier for the team and enabling us to offer even more opportunities to young people across London.

This week at The AHOY Centre
While our shipmates made the most of Saturday’s fantastic weather out on the water, Marcus & Zoe kept busy ashore—continuing the refit of one of our Drascombe Longboats and carrying out a quick repair on another. It was also great to see P*P & TGB out for a row!
On Monday, preparations began for an exciting upgrade as we started clearing out the main hall ahead of new flooring being fitted next week.
With some feisty weather midweek, Sailability & On The Right Tack swapped the river for time in the classroom and gym—making the most of the facilities on land.
We were also treated to a very interesting visitor on the river—not once, but twice!
Have a great bank holiday weekend 😊

This week at The AHOY Centre! ⚓
It’s been another busy one—here’s what we’ve been up to:
Our first Rowing Challenge of the year kicked off on Monday, with teams from across the construction industry taking to the Thames for an 8.6-mile row from Chelsea to Greenwich. Naturally, they stayed to celebrate with us at the Centre afterwards! Interested in joining the next one? Check the link in our bio.
But the excitement didn’t stop there…
On Wednesday, our On The Right Tack group successfully completed their Stage 1 Powerboating course—next stop: Stage 1 Sailing as they continue their journey.
Our long-standing volunteer Peter also joined the Sailability crew for a day out on the water—always great to see familiar faces getting involved.
Meanwhile, St John The Baptist Primary School have been making the most of our Sailing For All course—learning new skills, building confidence, and (most importantly) having plenty of fun.
And finally, we said goodbye to our Water Sports Manager, Nick, who is leaving us to pursue a new career. We’re incredibly grateful for the impact he’s had on the Centre and the lives of young people in South East London. Wishing you all the very best on your next tack—don’t leave it too long before you come back and say hello!
