Struggling to lose weight even though you’re training hard and eating “clean”?
Your gut might be the real reason your body isn’t changing.
Your microbiome — the community of bacteria in your gut — plays a major role in how your body burns fat, controls appetite, manages cravings, and responds to carbs.
One of the biggest links?
Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate, propionate, and acetate.
These are produced by your beneficial gut bacteria and are connected with:
Better insulin sensitivity
More stable blood sugar
Lower inflammation
Improved appetite control
But when your gut is out of balance, SCFA-producing bacteria often decrease — especially:
Faecalibacterium
Roseburia
Bacteroides spp.
Low levels of these microbes are associated with inflammation and poorer insulin regulation, which can make fat loss feel slow, stubborn, and frustrating.
