Did you know that almost all of Vermeer's interior scenes appear to have been made within the confines of the same room, with the same tiled floor and window high on the left? One theory suggests that he was using a "camera obscura", which is a darkened room with a tiny pinhole opening designed to project the image of a scene from an adjacent brightly lit room, similar to the principle of a modern mechanical camera. Examples of this include: "The Music Lesson"(c.1662-1665), "The Art of Painting"(c. 1666-1668), "The Astronomer"(c.1668), "The Geographer"(c.1668) and many more.
He earned the posthumous title of the "Master of Light" because of his meticulous attention to how light interacted with flesh, textiles, and gemstones in his paintings. His remarkable skill was derived from blending Renaissance techniques such as chiaroscuro with his distinctive application of light and shadow. This unique approach allowed him to convey texture, depth, and emotion through his use of paint. 🎨🖌
