Remembering Professor Pat Easterling FBA (1934 – 2026)

Here at the ICS we were sorry to learn of the death of Professor Pat Easterling in August.

Pat was an Honorary Fellow of the ICS in recognition of her longstanding support of the Institute and the national classics community, during seven years (1987-1994) she spent as as Professor of Greek at University College London and in roles including Chair of the Council of University Classical Departments (1991-3) and President of the Hellenic Society (1996-1999). She was much-respected and much-loved figure in the London Classics community.

“Civilizing” the World: Classicism, Neo-Classical Sculpture, and Plaster Casts in the Service of Imperial Powers and Post-Colonial Elites (1780-1945)

This conference interrogates the uses of Greco-Roman and neo-classical sculpture and architecture by European colonial powers to express and consolidate their power, at home and abroad, and the continuation and adaptation of these strategies in elite nation-building in many former colonies post-independence.

Speakers from across the world, including PhD students, advanced researchers, and curators, will discuss the roles classical and neo-classical art fulfilled globally, addressing the deployment of classical visual culture in the service of self-presentation and as a means to dominate indigenous, subaltern and settler populations.

Congratulations to Dr Alexandra Solovyev who has been awarded a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship at the University of Birmingham to examine the contributions made by the Royal Navy as an institution and by naval personnel as individuals to the development of the British Museum’s Greco-Roman collections, c. 1801-1874.

Catalogue of My Antiques: The Story of Victor Ehrenberg's Collection
New exhibition on display at the Combined Classics Library

The exhibitions tells the story of Professor Victor Ehrenberg's collection, showcasing how Ehrenberg acquired his collection, and how the ICS uses the objects in seminars, workshops and student placements to broaden educational opportunities at the university.

A scholar and author, Ehrenberg specialised in the study of Classical Greece. Born to a Jewish family in Hamburg in 1891, he relocated to England in 1939 to escape N**i persecution. He held various teaching positions here, including at Bedford College, a constituent of UoL that later merged with RHUL.
