SoundHoppers SoundHoppers is a deep-listening and sound exploration workshop for children aged between 5-11 years

The sessions aim to encourage careful and deep listening, and aim for the children to become more nuanced and sensitive to the different qualities of sound around them. This is done by allowing them to explore and play with specially constructed Soundboxes, and by introducing them to a variety of listening exercises that explore various aspects of sound – whether that’s proximity (ie how far or close a sound is) or timbre (ie the tonality and type of sound), or volume (ie how loud or quiet a sound is). A different approach is taken to regular music workshops in that focus is given to the wider creative possibilities with the medium of sound rather than on musicality. Music is usually considered a language in of itself in that it involves rhythm, pitch, dynamics, and modes of performance, but we feel steering away from this language allows children to be much more uninhibited in their explorations, and allows for a freer and more playful engagement. The intention then, is to instil within the children a sense of careful listening and sonic curiosity, without the formalities of traditional musical discourse.

SoundHoppers Seniors launched in Manchester this Spring. A new sonic arts programme for older people in Tameside, exploring sound and wellbeing.

Taking part in deep listening, sound making, recording and reflection, participants will develop practical skills and learn about different sound art themes.

We are working with Age UK and Holy Trinity Church and Community Centre. At the end of the project, we will host a celebration listening event sharing a collective soundscape created with the groups.

It’s an exciting project for Modus Arts, working with a new audience, to see how sound art interplays with wellbeing, and what we can learn about the hearing differences of older citizens.

The project is facilitated by Vicky Clarke and Hayley Suviste.

Looking for a half-term activity for your child this autumn?

SoundHoppers is doing a number of our active-listening/sound exploratory workshops for children (aged between 5-11 years old), both in-person and online.

You can find a link to book tickets for the online session below.
It will be held on Zoom.

Monday 28th of Oct, 10am.

The workshop will be delivered by the sound artist Frazer Merrick and will include generating abstract sonic instruments and more.
