2026 Student Publication: ‘Threads, Traces, and Artefacts: Revisiting Global Design History’ now available online!

The DHS publishes an annual student volume based on papers presented at the Annual Student Online Conference. This publication is double peer reviewed. This volume brings together selected papers from the Design History Society's 2025 international student conference. Written by emerging scholars working across diverse geographical and cultural contexts, this peer-reviewed collection examines how designed objects, practices and narratives travel, intersect and acquire new meanings across borders. Its chapters trace connections between people, materials, places and histories, bringing overlooked perspectives into dialogue with established accounts of design.

Papers authored by Pallavi Chattoraj, Choi Horang, Valentina Nitti, Ricardo H. A. Makino, Wing Tak (Vivian) Pang, Alice Ji-Won Kim, Maria Paula Armenta Garzón, Aishwarya Jamkhedkar, Peter Grace & Yiran Li, Ludovica Polo, Elsa Westreicher. With a preface by Sally-Anne Huxtable. Edited by Dan Mu, Deepika Srivastava and Elli Young, designed by Katherine Easthill, 2026.

Listen to the latest Routes to Design History podcast!

This month we speak with Johanna Agerman Ross, the Conran Foundation Chief Curator at the Design Museum, where she is part of the senior leadership team and oversees the Curatorial and Collection departments. In this role, she is also leading the development phase of the museum’s new collection gallery, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Prior to this, she was Curator of 20th-century and contemporary product and furniture design at the Victoria and Albert Museum, where she co-curated the Design 1900–Now Gallery and helped establish the initiative Make Good: Rethinking Material Futures. In 2011, she founded the design journal Disegno, where she continues to serve as Director. She received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the Arts London in 2025, her alma mater, and holds an MA in History of Design from the Royal College of Art.

Our Annual Publishing Workshop session ‘Developing an Academic Book Proposal’ will now be held on 14th September, 12:30pm-2pm BST

This workshop, rearranged from the annual conference, offers a practical introduction to developing a strong academic book proposal for publication through insights from Suzie Nash, Commissioning Editor at Bloomsbury. Participants will learn what publishers look for, explore the key components of a successful proposal, take part in an interactive exercise, and have opportunities to receive tailored feedback on their own book ideas.
