One day seminar format courses mainly on Islamic History and other subjects are covered but delivered by world class experts.

Islamic Courses is a “non-profit” project initiated by Islamic Circles, a community-based network that has been running at the Froud Centre, East London since January 2001. They organise a wide range of Islamic events, projects and activities including short courses, seminars, workshops, social gatherings and more. rs and mainstream Institutes like Darul Ulooms and Muslim Colleges. Subjects are delivered in one-day or weekend seminar format delivered by world class experts, be it Muslim or Non Muslims on the subject of expertise and research. We tend to focus on “Islamic History”, aspects of theology, Quranic Studies, Philosophy, Modernity, classical text based works by important and famous Islamic Scholars of the past and present and sometimes contemporary issues and matters not being address in scholastic and academic manner by many Muslim institutes. Islamic Courses is NOT an ”Academic Institute”, ”College” or else and thus we DO NOT provide any “ijaza’s”, “certification”, “academic qualifications”, set any exams be it oral or written, nor collect points leading to some sort of recognised qualification from any educational institute. Islamic Courses is non-sectarian and does not support or push any ideology, school of thought or Government agenda. Our presenters deliver their subject, and course attendees can agree and disagree with the presenter, and Islamic Courses does not take any position. We do not organise basic “Fard Ayn” courses pertaining to basic beliefs and rituals, as there are many organisations which are delivering such subjects. Our courses are open to ALL, Muslim or not, however given the nature of our courses, our targeted audience are “intermediate-higher” levels students of Arabic and Islamic Students be it university students, muslim activists, young imams or scholars, academics, or any one interested in the subject. We do expect people to have a basic understanding of the Quran, Seerah (biography of the Prophet (saw) and the The Khulfa-e-Rashideen (ra) and basic Islamic idea’s and concepts. All the courses are taught in English unless mention, however for some courses a good level of classical arabic is recommended and sometimes Latin, Farsi, Turkish and Urdu can be useful. Delivery of courses will vary from presenter to presenter but generally powerpoint slides is the norm or in the case of traditional Islamic scholars, students are expected to make all the notes.

Please find details of our following BOOK LAUNCH SEMINAR: THE TROJAN HORSE AFFAIR - FROM THE HORSE'S MOUTH with Professor John Holmwood [University of Nottingham]* and Tahir Alam [Chair of Muslim Parents' Association and Former OFSTED Inspector]** TONIGHT - Saturday 7th April 2018 between 6.30pm - 8.30pm at the London Muslim Centre.

In 2014 an investigation into an alleged plot to `Islamify' several state schools in Birmingham began. Known as the `Trojan Horse' affair, this caused a previously highly successful school to be vilified. Holmwood, an expert witness in the professional misconduct cases brought against the teachers, and O'Toole, who researches the government's counter-extremism agenda, challenge the accepted narrative and draw on the potential parallel with the Hillsborough disaster to suggest a similar false narrative has taken hold of public debate.

Professor Holmwood will talk about his new book 'Countering Extremism in British Schools?: The Truth about the Birmingham Trojan Horse Affair' along with Tahir Alam, the accused mastermind, who will talk about his side of the story and the implications for British Muslim education and wider civil participation.

The book highlights the major injustice inflicted on the teachers and shows how this affair was used to criticise multiculturalism, and justify the expansion of a broad and intrusive counter extremism agenda.

About the presenter:

Professor John Holmwood [University of Nottingham] *
Professor John Holmwood is Professor of Sociology at the University of Nottingham, having previously been at the University of Birmingham. From 2012 to 2014, he was President of the British Sociological Association and in 2014/15, he was Member of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, USA. He acted as an Expert Witness to the Court in the National College for Teaching and Leadership hearings against teachers arising from the Trojan Horse affair.

Tahir Alam [Chair of Muslim Parents' Association and Former OFSTED Inspector] ** Tahir Alam is former school governor and chair of Park View Educational Trust. He has been working to help improve schools in underprivileged areas for over twenty years as a school governor, OFSTED Inspector, and education advisor to many local education authorities. He was at the core of the infamous Trojan Hoax scandal and has been vilified and banned by the Department for Education from working in education as a result.

Professor Abdallah Schleifer is Distinguished Visiting Professor Faculty of Economics & Political Science Future University in Egypt & Professor Emeritus & Senior Fellow Kamal Adham Center for TV Journalism American University in Cairo, where he founded and served as first director of the center. He is a senior fellow at the Royal Aal al Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought, a columnist for Al Arabiya News and senior editor of the annual edition of The Muslim 500. He has served as NBC News bureau chief in Cairo; Al Arabiya bureau chief in Washington, DC; Middle East correspondent for Jeune Afrique; special correspondent for the New York Times in Amman, Jordan and managing editor of the Jerusalem Star/Palestine News published in then Jordanian Jerusalem. Schleifer was an original signatory of A Common Word Between Us and You and participated in the first Common Word conferences held at Yale and at Georgetown. He did his graduate studies on Islamic political thought at the American University in Beirut. He has taught and lectured at many universities across the world and published hundreds of articles in journals, conferences, media outlets and participated in numerous debates such as the Doha Debates and governmental levels in over the past fifty years.
