Our new probationers gathered for their very first Song School (rehearsal) of the Michaelmas Term — and their first since joining Westminster Cathedral Choir School (WCCS).

Probationers are choristers in training — boys at the very beginning of their musical journey, preparing to become full members of Westminster Cathedral Choir.

Every chorister’s journey begins here. There is much to learn and so much to look forward to as these boys take their first steps in continuing and preserving the world-famous choral tradition of Westminster Cathedral.

#𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 | 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫

Back in March, Westminster Cathedral Choir and the Britten Sinfonia performed Sir James Macmillan’s Stabat Mater — his monumental contemporary setting of the ancient Marian hymn.

Here are a few glimpses behind the scenes: photographs from the day, footage from a rehearsal, and a rather special moment as Sir James congratulates the choristers following the performance.

The photos and videos capture so much more than the rehearsals and performance itself — 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲, 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤, 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞, 𝐝𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞 behind every note.

𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘣𝘦 𝘢 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳?

Each September, up to six boys join Westminster Cathedral Choir School in Year 4 or Year 5. Choristership offers them the remarkable opportunity to sing in a 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝-𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐫, while receiving an outstanding education at 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐨𝐲𝐬.

For the right boy, the experience can be truly 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞-𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 — building 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, forging 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬, and nurturing a 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠.

Westminster Cathedral Choir School (WCCS) is an academically selective Catholic preparatory school for around 250 boys aged four to thirteen, from Reception to Year 8. Around twenty boys board as choristers, most joining in Year 4.

WCCS is a school for families who want an education that is intellectually serious, carefully taught and grounded in values.

Where WCCS can lead....

At 13+, WCCS boys progress to many of the country’s leading senior schools, with a significant number securing prestigious scholarships and awards.

Over the past seven years, destinations have included Eton College, Dulwich College, Harrow School, City of London School, St Paul’s School, Westminster School, Radley College, and King’s College, Wimbledon.

An exit list of which we are immensely proud. And for a school of our size, quite remarkable.

From significant and poignant occasions in Westminster Cathedral to concerts, premieres, distinguished visitors, filming projects and memorable encounters, 2025–26 gave the Westminster Cathedral choristers experiences they will remember for a lifetime.

𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 | 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐥𝐲𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤

Towards the end of the Lent Term, our U13s made their debut at the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens — the world’s largest schools rugby tournament.

Two excellent victories, some fiercely contested rugby and, above all, a day of tremendous teamwork, respect, effort, discipline and sportsmanship.

A memorable first appearance on the national stage — and a fantastic experience for the boys.
