Most people choose distance learning because it feels easier.

Flexible. Safer. Fits around your life.

But in 2026, there’s something most students don’t realise until it’s too late:

👉 You might NOT get a Maintenance Loan.

That means:
• no support for rent
• no help with living costs
• only a Tuition Fee Loan

And this is happening more often with:
– weekend courses
– distance learning
– part-time formats

The problem?

Students assume funding works the same as campus courses.

It doesn’t.

Before you apply, understand the rules — properly.

We broke everything down here (simple, clear ):

UK tuition fees are increasing from 2026.

If you’re planning to start university in England in September 2026, now is the time to start looking into your options — not later.

The annual tuition fee cap is rising to £9,790. However, for most students, this does not mean higher monthly repayments after graduation. Repayments depend on your income, not the total amount borrowed.

In this guide, we explain:

the updated tuition fees for 2026–2027

why the increase won’t affect most graduates monthly

more affordable alternatives, including HND pathways

what EU and expat students need to know about home vs international fees

when and how to apply for Student Finance

What many students don’t realise is that waiting too long can cost them good options.

Interviews have already started, and course places will continue to fill. That’s why it’s worth starting in May or June rather than waiting until September. You still have time now — but it’s much better to act early.

Still seeing £27,295 quoted as the Plan 2 student loan threshold? That figure is out of date. 📚

From 6 April 2025, the Plan 2 repayment threshold is £28,470.
From 6 April 2026, it rises to £29,385.

Here's what that means for your payslip:
→ Earn £35,000? You repay around £49/month
→ Earn £40,000? You repay around £86/month
→ Earn £50,000? You repay around £161/month

Plan 2 interest rates are currently 3.2% to 6.2%, depending on income and circumstances.

Should you overpay?
For many graduates, the answer is no — because extra repayments do not always save you money overall. It depends on your earnings trajectory and whether you're likely to clear the balance before it is written off.

❌ "Full-time” does NOT mean being at university 5 days a week.
And this misunderstanding stops thousands of adults in the UK from applying every year.

Many people assume that:
• Full-time study means daily attendance
• you can’t work alongside a degree
• You must quit your job to study

📌 That’s not how most UK universities actually work.

In our latest UniStart blog, we explain:
✔️ The real difference between part-time courses and full-time courses with limited attendance
✔️ How Student Finance works for adult learners
✔️ Why many full-time degrees only require 1–2 days per week on campus
✔️ How working adults successfully combine jobs and university

👉 Most courses on UniStart are officially full-time, but designed for working adults:
• 1–2 days per week on campus
• online learning + independent study
• compatible with real-life work schedules

🔎 Weekend Courses & Student Finance: What You Need to Know for 2026

Recently, there has been growing confusion around weekend-only university courses and eligibility for the Student Finance England Maintenance Loan.

It’s important to clarify one key point from the start:
👉 This is not a new rule and not a sudden policy change.
It relates to how certain courses — particularly those delivered exclusively on Saturdays and Sundays — are classified for funding purposes.

📌 What prospective students should understand:
• There are still universities offering courses with weekend delivery
• Having weekend classes does not automatically mean you are ineligible for a Maintenance Loan
• Eligibility depends on several factors, including:
• how the course is classified (in-attendance vs distance learning)
• whether there is any mandatory weekday attendance
• study intensity (full-time or part-time)
• the student’s personal circumstances

⚠️ Issues usually arise with courses that are strictly weekend-only, as these may be treated as distance learning for maintenance support. In such cases, students may still qualify for a Tuition Fee Loan, but not for a Maintenance Loan to cover living costs.

To help students make informed decisions, we’ve published a detailed guide explaining:
• how course classification works
• what funding may still be available
• which flexible study options are more likely to retain full funding
• what to check before enrolling

Article #19 is live.

One commitment I made with UniStart is simple: to write every day, in English, clear answers to the most common problems people in the UK face when applying to university and Student Finance.

Today’s article covers something I see far too often — and something that stops many people right when they’re already under pressure:

“My Student Finance application was rejected. What do I do now?”

That rejection message can feel final. But in reality, in most cases, it isn’t.
More often than not, it comes down to:
• missing or unclear documents
• income evidence from the wrong tax year
• eligibility confusion
• or a small mistake that triggered a review

In this article, I explain:
• the most common reasons Student Finance applications are rejected
• what to fix first (and what not to panic about)
• when to resubmit vs when to appeal
• how long reviews usually take
• and the mistakes that cause unnecessary delays or lost funding

No hype. No guarantees. Just clear steps, written to reduce stress and confusion.

If you know someone in the UK who’s applying to university and struggling with Student Finance, feel free to share this with them. Sometimes clarity is all people need to move forward.

Are you a parent in the UK thinking about starting university? Then this is something you really shouldn’t ignore, because it could be worth thousands of pounds every year. 👇

✅ Childcare Grant (Student Finance England) can cover 85% of your actual childcare costs (nursery, registered childminder, after-school clubs).
It’s not a loan and doesn’t need to be repaid.

💷 For the 2025/26 academic year, you could receive:
• Up to £199.62 per week for 1 child
• Up to £342.24 per week for 2+ children

That’s around £6,700+ per year for one child or £11,600+ per year for two or more children, depending on your real childcare costs.

⚠️ Important things many student parents don’t know:
• You must use registered childcare (Ofsted or equivalent)
• It’s available only to full-time students
• You usually can’t claim Childcare Grant if you (or your partner) receive childcare support through Universal Credit or Tax-Free Childcare — in most cases, you need to choose one scheme

🎯 I’ve put together a clear, step-by-step guide with real examples, eligibility rules, and the most common mistakes to avoid.
