Measuring wealth is crucial to get a better idea about the state and progress of an economy.

Many people are familiar with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) a commonly used economic measure of national output. However, welfare economists are increasingly pointing towards a group of neglected “missing capitals” that are important for assessing the growth of an economy, sustainability and evaluating changes in economic welfare.

Nearly all important statistics are actually an "estimate" – a statistical judgement that is subject to some degree of uncertainty.

So how can we best communicate that uncertainty while still maintaining trust in the statistics themselves?

“Sometimes the win is just the conversation itself” - Richard Heys, ONS.

Last week, ESCoE Director Rebecca Riley was joined by Richard Heys, Deputy Chief Economist at the Office for National Statistics at an event organised by King's Business School.

They discussed the collaboration between ESCoE and the ONS, and the work involved in establishing and fostering long-lasting, impactful research partnerships. There were interesting reflections on cultural change and engagement and how this has been a key impact of the partnership so far.
