In the new episode of HENI Talks, Warburg Institute Director Bill Sherman explores the work of Charles Holden (1875 – 1960), the uncompromising architect of London’s first two genuinely modern skyscrapers, including our very own Senate House.
Learn how Holden navigated legal loopholes to bypass strict Victorian height limits, fought off public censorship over avant-garde art, and taught an historically low-built city to look, and build, upwards.

⏰ Being Human Festival application deadline
There are just 2 weeks left to apply for this year's Being Human Festival, the UK's national festival of the humanities.
Each year we invite humanities researchers and staff from universities and research organisations to apply to take part in the festival by organising a public engagement event, activity or project.
Being Human Festival 2026 will take place from 5 - 14 November with the theme Crossroads. From the streets of protest to the meeting points of cultures, from moments when society pivots to the choices we face today about climate, democracy, and technological change, we invite researchers to explore spaces of convergence and divergence, where paths meet, decisions will be made, and history turns.
Apply online by 5pm on Friday 3 July to take part: https://bit.ly/4j6TsMt

Join our panel of award-winning authors, historians, scientists and broadcasters for a high-stakes, high-altitude debate!
Each speaker will bring a single object - a ‘Trojan Horse’ that contains surprising worlds hidden inside it. These objects may look simple, but each one carries stories of history, science, politics, memory, and imagination.
One by one, you will decide which objects are thrown overboard and which deserve to stay. Each speaker must convince you that their object matters most. Round by round, the stakes rise until only one object survives!
This event is organised as part of the School of Advanced Study’s Public Humanities Fellowship, which aims to broaden and reimagine how humanities research engages with the world.
