North London School of Sports Massage Assess, Treat & Manage soft tissue injuries with our Level 5 in Sports Massage & Soft Tissue Therapy!
(1)

Established in 2004 in London, NLSSM is the training ground for professionals wanting to develop and strengthen their soft tissue skills. We offer a BTEC/Edexcel Level 5 Professional Diploma in Sports Massage and Remedial Soft Tissue Therapy as well as Continuing Professional Development short courses. Our BTEC Level 5 Professional Diploma in Sports Massage and Remedial Soft Tissue Therapy is designed for anyone with a serious interest in pursuing corrective soft tissue therapy as a career. We will take you from start to finish without having to do multiple massage courses at various levels. This is a bespoke course that fulfils all the learning outcomes that are based on your future employers requirements, no prior Level 3 or 4 training necessary. It will give you the skills needed to practice as an independent professional therapist, work with elite sports athletes, or work within a medical hands-on health care team. At NLSSM we want to inspire you, refresh, revive and revitalise your massage therapy skills. Our aim is to make your experience with us one you will want to repeat, to motivate you to be the best massage therapist you can be! Upon graduation, therapists can become members of The Sports Massage Association (SMA) and the Register of Remedial Masseurs and Manipulative Therapists (LCSP) and most other Professional Associations. We’re proud of the reputation that NLSSM The School of Sports Massage holds within the industry and and that our graduates are highly sought after within both the sport and health industries. We would welcome the opportunity to advance your soft tissue skills.

Have you ever had a client say any of these? Swipe to view >

There are a lot of assumptions out there about massage therapy and while they’re understandable, they don’t always reflect what actually happens in practice.

So, encourage your clients to ask questions, because the more informed clients are, the better the experience for everyone. Clearer expectations, better outcomes, and a stronger, more professional industry overall!

In Episode 5 of our Massage for Beginners series, we’re putting the techniques we’ve covered so far into practice with a back massage, focusing on some of the most commonly treated areas in clinic.

We’ll work across the upper back, shoulders and into the neck area. This episode is about bringing our foundational techniques together (compression, effleurage, petrissage) to work as part of a flowing treatment to the back.

We will continue to apply the principles of strong body mechanics and client positioning from the previous episodes, helping you work effectively and pain-free.

In this episode, we cover:
• Positioning the client comfortably
• Working across the upper back and shoulders
• Upper trapezius and the area around the neck
• Working around the scapula and down the side of the back
• Bringing compression, effleurage, petrissage and assisted thumb work together

We hope this is a useful revision tool if you have just started as a therapist or are a seasoned pro looking for a refresher. Enjoy!

Many therapists say the same thing: clients rarely ask about qualifications.

While that may seem harmless, it highlights a real issue in our industry. Massage therapy remains largely unregulated in many areas, which means:

> Anyone can create a course
> Anyone can call themselves “qualified”
> And unfortunately, some therapists enter practice without adequate training

As professionals, we all share a responsibility to help protect the integrity of our field and that starts with client education.

Encourage your clients to ask questions like:

> Where did you train?
> Are you insured or registered with a professional body?
> How many hours of hands-on training did you complete?

When clients understand the difference between a short course and a comprehensive program, they can make safer, more informed decisions.

We all benefit from a more professional, trusted industry! You can find out more about what to look out for in our blog 'The Pitfalls of Short, Intensive Courses': https://www.nlssm.com/the-pitfalls-of-short-intensive-courses/

In Episode 4 of our Massage for Beginners series, we move on from foundational hand techniques to explore forearm work and assisted thumb techniques.

These techniques can be useful when working more deeply and specifically, but using them effectively is about much more than simply applying pressure. We look at how to use your stance, body mechanics and body weight to create pressure while protecting your own body, particularly your thumbs.

In this episode, you’ll see:

• Using your forearm effectively on the posterior thigh
• How to use your legs and body weight to create depth
• Maintaining good posture and positioning
• How to protect your thumbs with an assisted technique
• Why slower movements are important for deeper techniques
• How to check in with your client and avoid overworking an area

Although this series is called Massage for Beginners, these videos are also designed as a useful refresher for therapists looking to revisit the fundamentals and refine their technique.

This episode builds on our previous video covering body mechanics, stance and positioning, so if you haven’t watched that yet, we recommend starting there.
