Life had dealt him a hard hand. A man, worn down by endless struggles, wandered from one railway station to another, scraping by on the kindness of strangers. Each day blurred into the next—a monotonous cycle of begging, just to survive.
One day, his eyes landed on a well-dressed gentleman at the station. He thought to himself, Surely, this man must be wealthy. Filled with hope, he approached the traveller and pleaded for help. Yet, despite his repeated attempts, the gentleman refused.
Finally, exasperated, the man asked,
“Why do you keep pestering me when it’s clear I’m not giving you anything? And even if I were to give you money, what would you offer me in return?”
The beggar looked at him, puzzled.
“Sir, I have nothing to give you. I barely survive on the charity of others. What could I possibly offer?”
The gentleman replied sharply,
“If you have nothing to give, perhaps you should stop asking altogether.”
With that, he turned and walked away, leaving the beggar deep in thought.
As he wandered to the next station, the traveller’s words echoed in his mind: “What do I have to offer?” Shoulders slumped and spirit low, he mulled over the question. Then, as he gazed down at the tracks, he noticed small flowers blooming along the edge. An idea took root in his mind.
What if I gave a flower to everyone who helped me?
The very next day, the beggar began offering flowers to those who handed him coins. It was a small gesture, but it brought a spark of joy to people’s faces. Over time, he became known as the “flower beggar,” admired for his thoughtful approach.
Weeks later, he encountered the same gentleman again. This time, the beggar approached him with newfound confidence.
“Sir, I now have something to offer in return.”
Curious, the man handed him a small coin. The beggar promptly offered a delicate flower in exchange. Surprised and pleased, the gentleman remarked,
“Now you’ve grasped the essence of exchange. Without giving something back, you’ve no right to take.”
These words ignited something deep within the beggar. The joy he saw on people’s faces, coupled with the traveller’s wisdom, sparked a determination he had never felt before. With conviction, he declared,
“From today, I am no longer a beggar. I am a businessman!”
From that day forward, he stopped relying on wildflowers. Instead, he began purchasing blooms to sell. What started as a humble effort grew into a thriving flower business near the railway station.
A year later, the gentleman boarded a train and took his seat. Sitting beside him was a sharply dressed man, his face alight with confidence. As the train rolled on, the man turned and said,
“Sir, do you remember me? This is the third time we’ve met.”
The gentleman looked at him, confused.
“I don’t believe I do. I’d remember meeting someone like you.”
The man chuckled.
“You may not recognise me, but I was once the beggar you met at the station. The first time we crossed paths, you taught me the value of giving. The second time, you inspired me to dream bigger. After that meeting, I stopped begging and began selling flowers. Today, I run a successful business—all because of your words. I am deeply grateful.”
The Moral of the Story
This simple tale carries a profound truth. Without understanding the value of giving or taking bold action, one cannot hope to achieve great things. Dreams don’t come true on their own—they require effort, determination, and courage.
As the Quran reminds us:
“Man will not get anything unless he works hard” (Surah An-Najm: 39).
So why wait? Begin chasing your dreams today—with passion, resolve, and an unshakable belief in your own potential.
