Raptor Awards

Raptor Awards is a not-for-profit expert body serving the Bird of Prey community. Raptor Awards is passionate about the welfare of birds of prey.

We specialise in the development of National and Occupational Standards for Bird of Prey keepers and professionals. This is why we exist. The welfare of birds of prey is at the heart of everything that we do and every decision that we take. We believe that quality training and assessment is crucial for those that keep and/ or work with birds of prey, which in turn contributes to the welfare of birds of prey. We are therefore the lead body for bird of prey training and assessment through our network of approved training providers.

Welcome to Terminology Tuesday!
In this series we will post falconry terminology and explanations that you may know... or not 🤔
Starting the series off, we have Furniture 🛋
A common word used for the equipment you might find on a bird of prey.

To most people, using the word furniture might raise a few eyebrows 🫣 after all, why would a hawk need a sofa?
Anyway, it is one of the many interesting traditional terms that we will look at across this series.

Why is it called furniture?
There are a few suggested explanations, mostly coming from the older English meaning, furnishing something is to equip it, hence, bird of prey furniture.
It crops up in different contexts too, e.g, horse furniture, ship furniture and military furniture.

Did you already know the explanation of this one? Let us know in the comments 👇
