Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), also known as rheumatism, is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology. Its main clinical manifestations include chronic, symmetrical, polyarticular synovitis and extra-articular lesions, characterized by autoimmune inflammatory disease. The disease primarily affects small joints such as those in the hands, wrists, and feet, with symmetric distribution and recurrent flare-ups. Systemic manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis, in addition to joint involvement, include fever, fatigue, pericarditis, subcutaneous nodules, pleuritis, arteritis, and peripheral neuropathy.
Bee venom therapy has shown promising results for rheumatoid arthritis. This therapy involves using live bee stings on acupuncture points or affected areas, as well as injecting bee venom solution to treat the disease. Bee venom, the main component of bee stings, is a clear, pale yellow venom produced by the venom glands and auxiliary glands of bees. It is stored in the venom sac and is a complex mixture with good pharmacological effects and biological activity. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, bee venom can promote blood circulation, reduce swelling and relieve pain, regulate menstruation and activate collaterals, dispel wind, and dispel cold. Additionally, when bee stings pe*****te acupuncture points, they provide mechanical stimulation similar to acupuncture, combined with the pharmacological effects of bee venom. The local redness and swelling reaction after bee stings also have a therapeutic effect similar to mild moxibustion. Therefore, bee venom therapy combines the effects of acupuncture, mild moxibustion, and medication, making it incomparable to other methods.
