Not two.
Not one.
Four.

And my GPA?
Around 1.8 or 1.9.
Yes… that bad.

But My real life.

When I got admission into Unilag Distance Learning…
I came with confidence.
Too much confidence.
Because before then…
I was in Yabatech.
And I was doing well.

So in my mind…
“School is school… I know this already.”

But University of Lagos showed me something I will never forget:
“Confidence without understanding is dangerous.”

When we resumed…
They explained everything during our matriculation:
LMS (Learning Management System)
Online assignments
Quizzes
GST tests
CBT exams

But guess what?
I came late.
So while others understood the system…
I was lost from Day 1.

I WAS IN SCHOOL… BUT NOT IN SCHOOL
Lectures?
I can count how many times I attended.

Assignments?
I didn’t even know where to submit them.

Tests?
I didn’t write any.

In fact…
Let me shock you.
One day…
I woke up and realized:
“Exam is tomorrow.”
No preparation.
No revision.
No clue.

That was how I entered the exam hall…
Not with confidence…
But with confusion.

The first time someone showed me LMS…
It was 20 minutes to deadline.

The guy helping me was clicking:
A
B
C
Random answers.
As a computer literate…
I knew those answers were wrong..
But it was too late.
That day…
I knew something was wrong.
because it was a Computer Related Course.

RESULT DAY?
When the result came out…
It didn’t shock me.
Because deep down…
I already knew.

FOUR carryovers
GPA below 2.0
That result was not from wicked lecturers.
It was not from bad luck.

It was from:
Ignorance
Carelessness
Overconfidence

That day…
I told myself:
“This school is not for me… I’m done.”
I was ready to quit.
But life has a way of sending one voice…
At the right time.

A friend looked at me and said:
“Ike… you are not a failure. You just don’t understand the system yet... Don't quit what you have started”
That sentence…
Changed everything.

I went back to check my result carefully…
And I noticed something strange.
Even though I didn’t prepare…
I still passed:
Financial Accounting
Finance and Banking
Entrepreneurship
Computer and Business-related courses

But what did I fail?
GST
And one course full with Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba History.
Courses I had no connection with

That was when it hit me:
“You don’t fail everywhere…
You fail where you don’t understand.”

As your Financial Literacy Advocate...
Let me explain this better with a Simple Story.
Imagine:
Mama Ngozi sends her son to market.
She says:
“Go and buy tomatoes.”
Even if market is hard…
He will deliver.
Why?
Because he understands tomatoes.

But if she says:
“Go and buy something you don’t know…”
He will get confused.
Waste money.
Come back empty.
That was exactly what happened to me.

When we got to YEAR 2
Others were writing:16 courses
Me?
20 courses
Because I was carrying Year 1 on my head.
One day…
I had two exams at the same time.
Same minute.
Same server.
I had to split myself:
20 minutes here
20 minutes there
That was not exam again…
That was war.

I did one thing differently.
Just one.
I started asking questions.

I had a friend called Rachi.
She would tell me:
“Ike Assignment is out ooh”
“Quiz is open”
“Deadline is near”
For the first time…
I was no longer guessing.

I became aware.
And let me tell you something:
Awareness is more powerful than intelligence.

Infact:
In my two hundred levels...
I was preparing like my life depended on it.
And results changed:
Year 2 GPA: 3.2

From 1.8…
To excellence.
Not magic.
Not luck.
Just:
Responsibility
Awareness
Consistency

Even in our final year…
Some classmates told me:
“You should run for DLISA President.”
I laughed.
Because in their mind…
I was one of the smartest.
They didn’t know…
This same guy once had FOUR carryovers.

Let me be honest...
I didn’t jump from failure to perfection.
No.
I just made sure of one thing:
“I will never fail again because of ignorance.”
Slowly…
My grades improved
My understanding grew
My confidence returned

Until one day…
Without noise…
Without announcement…
I graduated.

THE RESULTS?
Second Class.
Not the best.
But far from where I started.

Let me tell you the truth many people won’t say:
University didn’t make me successful.
What it gave me was:
Awareness
Exposure
Direction

Today…
If an accountant prepares financial statements for my Company…
I understand it.
If something is wrong…
I can spot it.
That is education.
Not just passing exams.

Read this slowly:
“Failure is not the opposite of success…
Ignorance is.”

Many people are not failing because they are dull…
They are failing because:
They don’t understand the system
They don’t understand themselves
They don’t ask questions
