Year 6 students each wrote a letter to two classes in the Shiloh Kidcare school in Ghana, for which The Roche School fundraised. Mrs Theresa took their letters to Ghana at Easter and Miss Olga brought the replies back on the last day of term. They loved hearing back from the students in Ghana. The Roche School continues to be in touch with the school as they continue to send regular donations of books for which FORS provides the shipment cost.

We bid a fond adiós to our outgoing Head Vania Adams who is retiring after 14 years at the helm. Vania writes: "My final days at The Roche School as Head have been so happy. Parties, picnics, music, cards and gifts (as well as LOTS of hugs) have all played their part in making me feel genuinely appreciated and grateful. Much love and thanks to you all - pupils, families and staff. I believe the school will remain the loving and productive place it is at the moment under the able leadership of Jonny Gilbert and hope very much that he receives the same levels of parental support and engagement that I have had the pleasure of experiencing. I will miss you SO much! Yours, emotionally, Vania!"

Miss Lydia took the Community and Fundraising Team to the Little Village Hub on Friday where they had a tour of the hub and spent a few hours sorting out some of the bags of donations from The Roche School. They put the clothes into piles starting from 0 -3 months all the way to 5/6 years. They learnt a bit more about what this charity does and how important it is to the local community.

The Year 6 play on Wednesday was a total triumph. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Camelot was an inspired and silly piece in which pupil performances showed the benefit of their many years of dramatic training at the school: comic timing, vocal projection, acting & dancing skills (even for the trees) were all tippy top. Well done to all involved.

The Roche School parents know how to party and they duly demonstrated this, ably assisted by some staff, at The Roche School Parent Party on Friday night. The 80s themed party filled the dance floor and there were heartfelt tributes to our outgoing head Vania Adams who retires at the end of term.

The Year 6 Book Club had the honour of attending the The Yoto Carnegies prize ceremony at The Cambridge Theatre in London on Thursday. Pupils have been reading the shortlisted picture books with Ms Lorna and Miss Nikki and were delighted to see that The Tree and The River by Aaron Becker - Delilah's pick! - won the illustration prize. It's a beautiful wordless picture book which explores our impact on the environment.

Rain did not stop play at the annual school fete on Saturday. Teachers were splatted, faces were painted and prizes won in time honoured tradition. With plenty to eat and drink accompanied by the tunes of the BADOTSA Bugles and Drums of the Stedfast Association, the “summer” was anything but a washout! Thanks to the efforts of FORS and our parent volunteers, a good time was had by all. See more here: https://therocheschool.com/2024/06/17/play-stops-rain/

Congrats to alumna Claudia who recently graduated from Harvard University where she was investigating how to improve drug delivery. After leaving The Roche School, she went to Saint Paul's Girls' School and then completed a PhD in biomedical engineering at the University of Oxford.
Here's a recap of her time at The Roche School:
“The Roche School was the most amazing school for me. It allowed me to get a fantastic foundation in Drama, Sport and Art as well as inspiring a love for learning in me. The small classes and the incredible teachers allowed me to learn things thick and fast when I understood them easily, and take more time and in more depth when topics were a bit more challenging.”

The Year 3 production was a riotous romp through fairyland. As befits a Roald Dahl interpretation of fairy tale classics there were quite a few real life problems to get through including tricky families and pressing money problems but it all came right in the end with the help of the magic mirror. The Year 3 performances were confident and clear but best of all they really loved doing it. Bravissimo!!!

On Monday night, the Year 5 Shakespeare Club performed an abridged version of 'Macbeth' at The Shaw Theatre in Euston. Along with two other schools, they got the opportunity to perform in front of a large audience, as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival. It was a very exciting experience for them all and they were complimented by the festival organisers for the way they delivered their lines with clarity and maturity. Here are some rehearsal pics. Look out for video highlights coming soon!

We really enjoyed Languages Week last week, especially the assembly where Reception and Year 1 sang in Spanish, and Year 6 performed some hilarious fairytales in French. During the week, the children got to try Spanish and French cuisine, and the little ones watched a play in Spanish.
Everything culminated with a dress-up to celebrate the rich variety of cultures at our school. ‘Muy bien’ and ‘très bien’
