al-Ḥasan (al-Baṣri) said, “I was with Ibn al-Mubārak one day and we came to a watering place. The people were drinking from it and Ibn al-Mubārak came closer in order to get a drink. The people did not know him and shoved and pushed him. When he came out he said, ‘Life is but this’ meaning we are not known nor are we revered.”

- Sh. Muḥammad b. Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn -
“Once, King Khālid visited the Shaykh at his house, as was the habit of the rulers in their high regard and respect for the scholars. When the King saw the humble home of the Shaykh he offered to have a new house built for him, [at which] the Shaykh thanked him saying:
‘I am building a house in al-Ṣāliḥiyyah [a district in ʿUnayzah, Qasīm], however the masjid and the charitable trust are in need of [financial] assistance.’
So, after the King left, some of those sitting in the gathering said: ‘O Shaykh, we did not know that you were building a home in al-Ṣāliḥiyyah,’ to which the Shaykh replied:
‘Isn’t the graveyard in as-Ṣāliḥiyyah!?’”
May Allah bestow His infinite mercy upon him, Amin!
