The BRIT School

The BRIT School The UK’s First & Leading Performing & Creative Arts School dedicated to free education for young people rated Ofsted Outstanding in all categories 🥇🌈
(473)

The BRIT School is Britain's only FREE Performing Arts & Technology School. It is an independent, state funded City College for the Technology of the Arts, the only one of its kind dedicated to education & vocational training for the performing arts, media, art & design and the technologies that make performance possible. As a school for 14-19 year olds, we are unique & pioneering in our approach to education, but we are NOT a stage or fame school. We recognise that most of our students intend to make a career in the arts, entertainment & communications industries, but the school expects all to follow full time courses to completion. It is a vocational school; if an applicant is determined on a life devoted to art, dance, music, radio, television/film or theatre, then this could well be the right place. We also pride ourselves on providing an excellent general education that helps prepare young people for the future. We encourage our students to go on to specialist colleges & universities or into employment in the creative industries. Indeed the majority do so. If we are devoted to the arts, then we also recognise that the technology of our title is essential for a complete education. We have formidable resources, to allow students to study in sophisticated environments equivalent to a modern workplace. BRIT stands for the British Record Industry Trust. Without the generosity of the record industry, the school would never have been built & our superb facilities would never have been installed. Furthermore we greatly benefit from the advice & support given to students & staff from our wide range of friends in the music & wider arts industries. The school has a unique atmosphere of support & respect which helps cultivate the ability and talent of our young people. Students & staff have created an open, friendly, flexible yet rigorous approach to study. Our achievements at both Key Stage 4 & Post-16 in vocational & academic qualifications testify to our success, as do the range of successful former students now working & studying in the creative industries. We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Colin Woolway, founder of the Drumsense teaching programme and a much-loved member of the BRIT community.

Colin had been playing and teaching drums professionally since 1976, with an extraordinary career spanning theatre, jazz, cabaret, variety, stadium tours and eight years with Suzi Quatro. He was also the author of the Drumsense books and DVDs and wrote a monthly column for Rhythm magazine for more than 20 years.

For many years, Colin shared his knowledge, passion and experience with our students at BRIT, inspiring generations of young drummers, helping them to develop their craft and find their own musical voice.

Thank you, Colin, for everything you gave to our students and the wider music community. Your passion, knowledge and generosity will be remembered by so many.

Our thoughts are with Colin’s family, friends, colleagues and all those who had the privilege of learning from him.

❤️

🎬 Ahead of Moana arriving in cinemas on 10th July, director Thomas Kail joined students for a special Q&A. From bringing Hamilton and In the Heights to the stage to directing for the big screen, Thomas shared insights into his creative journey, the making of Moana, and the values that have shaped his career along the way.

Hearing directly from world-class creatives helps our students see what’s possible, while giving them the insight, confidence and inspiration to forge their own creative paths.

A huge thank you to Walt Disney Studios UK for making it happen💙

Last Saturday 28th March we launched a powerful new pilot programme called Connect To Inspire which aims to find, train and elevate the next generation of diverse dance talent in and around Croydon.

This pilot programme is a new collaboration between The BRIT School, BRIT Kids, Rambert Company, Rambert School, Rambert Grades and the Croydon Schools’ Dance Association, working together to strengthen dance pathways and create meaningful progression routes for the next generation.

At The BRIT School, we believe talent should never be limited by access, and Connect To Inspire reflects our commitment to creativity, community and industry standard training.

Rambert School graduates Luke Buckley and Jemima Sparrow have spent the last two months delivering 15 workshops in Croydon School. The workshops have introduced the Rambert Grades programme which will be delivered through Connect To Inspire to over 400 young people across Croydon. On Saturday, 30 young talented dancers attended Connect To Inspire’s official Launch Event, where they; connected with one another, had a tour of The BRIT School facilities and learned more about this exciting new venture.

This initiative places access, inclusion and opportunity at its heart, offering high quality dance training for young people across Croydon. We are grateful to Croydon Schools Dance Association, Rambert Grades and Rambert School for funding this project.

He encouraged students to connect with their peers, emphasising the power of the community within the creative industries and on the global stage.
