Developing the Future of AI-Mediated Dialogic Assessment 🚀
We are excited to have begun the development of an AI-mediated dialogic assessment tool designed to support learners undertaking Level 2 Adult Social Care qualifications in the UK.
Made possible through funding from the Ufi VocTech Trust, our project brings together expertise in vocational education, assessment and artificial intelligence to develop an API that does more than simply generate assessment decisions.
We aim to create an intelligent system capable of engaging learners in meaningful professional dialogue, supporting reflection, probing understanding, and recognising metacognitive processes while maintaining the assessor firmly within the assessment process.
The project originated from research being undertaken by BRITEthink Co-Founder Robert Mitton as part of his Doctor of Education (EdD) at UCL Institute of Education. As the research developed, its potential to improve vocational assessment attracted the support of the Ufi VocTech Trust, enabling us to move from academic research towards developing a practical tool for the sector.
Our ambition is not to replace assessors, but to build a reliable and evidence-informed technology that enhances professional judgement, improves consistency, and increases access to high-quality dialogic assessment.
The photograph shows Robert conducting a professional discussion with a learner. Dialogic assessment is becoming increasingly important within vocational education, providing learners with opportunities to explain their thinking, demonstrate authentic understanding, justify decisions, and reflect on their practice; elements that are often difficult to capture through written evidence alone.
Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing updates as we design, test and evaluate the system, working closely with practitioners to ensure it supports, rather than replaces, human assessment.
Watch this space. We’re looking forward to sharing the journey.
