WHY DOES BRUISING HAPPEN AFTER INJECTABLE TREATMENTS?
For an aesthetics practitioner, understanding facial vascular anatomy is fundamental to safe injecting.
The face contains an extensive network of arteries, veins and smaller blood vessels. Even with careful assessment and good injection technique, a needle or cannula can occasionally disrupt a small vessel, resulting in temporary bruising.
For students, the key is not simply knowing that bruising can occur — it’s understanding how to minimise risk and how to recognise when something may require further assessment.
During training, practitioners should learn to:
🩺 Understand relevant facial vascular anatomy
💉 Use appropriate injection techniques and treatment planes
📋 Take a thorough medical and medication history
⚠️ Recognise expected post-treatment bruising versus concerning symptoms
🗣️ Set realistic expectations and provide appropriate aftercare
🚨 Know when symptoms require urgent escalation
Bruising is generally temporary, but severe or worsening pain, pale or mottled skin, or visual changes should never be dismissed as routine bruising and require urgent clinical assessment.
