Hello! May! The is here, it was chosen by our beloved Trustee Severn and written by our cherished Patron Cameron, our fabulous Chair of Trustees Kemp and our wonderful friend and member Eichsteller.
Definitely a must-read! And here Hannah tells us why:
“I decided to choose this article celebrating 20 years of IJSP as it highlighted to me just how far the reach of IJSP has grown. I was amazed to hear it has readers in over 160 countries – a stark reminder that we are not alone in our interest and passion for learning about Social Pedagogy. I would recommend reading this short but enlightening piece as it reminded me that Social Pedagogy impacts so many more disciplines other than just Residential Child Care, which is my remit. It also brought to my attention several other articles that I had forgotten about or not even been aware of – a warning - it is easy to get lost down an article rabbit hole after reading this paper!” – Hannah Severn, SPPA Trustee.

Welcome April! The article of the month is here! It was written by Lowis Charfe and chosen by Bianka Lang, a must-read!
“I have chosen this article by Lowis Charfe, as I am very interested in relational leadership within Social Care. The article brings to life how to critically discover a relational approach to leadership. It looks at the Human Learning System and explores the social pedagogy leadership framework. The social pedagogy leadership framework explores the steering of complexity in direct practice and supports positive organisational cultures and systems, as well as the development of ethical and relational leadership.
I’m very excited to share this article with you!” - Bianka Lang, SPPA Trustee

The article of this month was chosen by Tanya Alder, SPPA Trustee and Treasurer, and it was written by Geoffrey Hinchliffe. The paper explores the meaning of education in contrast with pedagogy. Whereas education can be defined as ‘learning for its own sake ‘pedagogy can be defined as learning orientated towards social goals.
Tanya chose this article because:
“As a retired foster carer education was always important for our children. Learning gave them a reason to go to school and was always a great confidence booster, learning with pedagogy in mind gave them the tools to build on and taught them how to survive in a school-based education system.
This was even more important as many of our foster children were in SEND schools and
many had never been in full time education or even in a school. This was a great experience, especially as the ones we dealt with were very pedagogy based. I think this article highlights the benefits”.

On 12th February we celebrate the 90th birthday of Pat Petrie. Since the 1990s, Pat has been one of the most influential British researchers in social pedagogy. Her survey of school-age childcare in the EU (1996) led to the Department of Health inviting her to look further into social pedagogy. This culminated in her establishing the Centre for Understanding Social Pedagogy (CUSP) in 2009.
Shortly after, social pedagogy was piloted in children’s residential care in England, followed by the Fostering Network’s introduction of social pedagogy into foster care from 2013 onwards. In 2017, Pat was one of the founding members of SPPA. Please share the celebrations 🎉 by wishing Pat a Happy Birthday 🎂 in the comments.
