Typical ultrasound-rich areas include Anaesthetics, Outpatient Clinics, Intensive Care Units, Radiology Departments and Emergency Departments.

Once you've found an ultrasound machine and have permission to use it for training, note the model and try this AI prompt to learn its basic functions:

"You're a PoCUS instructor. Teach me the … basics. Be extremely specific—use exact button names, menu locations, and control positions as they appear on the machine. If you're uncertain about a specific detail on this model, say so rather than guess. Include: power on/off, probe types and how to select them, preset modes, depth, gain, TGC, freeze button. Thank you to everyone who attended our Basic Paediatric Ultrasound (CACTUS) course this July – especially our youngest scanning models!

If you'd like to attend a hands-on paediatric ultrasound course where you'll scan real children, as well as adult volunteers and simulators capable of reproducing a wide range of pathologies, join us on 2 September or 8 October 2026.

Our course is approved by the Intensive Care Society (ICS) and the Paediatric Critical Care Society (PCCS). It is suitable for clinicians pursuing accreditation in Children's Acute Ultrasound (CACTUS) Lung and CACTUS Heart. In addition, the course covers vascular access and basic abdominal scanning.
