good luck to you all next week in Birmingham!
We’re pleased to announce that over the past two years, we have delivered over 170 hours of tutoring and coaching for the CESR/portfolio pathway, supporting more than 50 ophthalmologists worldwide—and counting.
The CESR route is a demanding yet immensely rewarding pathway. It remains the only route for experienced ophthalmologists to gain entry onto the UK Specialist Register and become eligible for substantive consultant ophthalmologist posts in the UK.
If this is a pathway you are considering, don’t delay—get in touch to get started straightaway!
With the new rules being implemented around training and local UK graduates prioritisation, it’s unsurprising that more IMGs—both in the UK and overseas—are turning towards the portfolio pathway to secure consultant posts. I’ve personally seen this over the past few days, with many junior ophthalmologists worldwide asking about the route and actively changing their plans.
From my own experience, if you are hardworking and based in a supportive department, it is entirely possible to secure a consultant post well before a colleague who is following the traditional specialty training route which could take more time.
Over the next five months, we are likely to see a surge in applications via the old CESR route ahead of the deadline, followed by a sustained influx through the new portfolio pathway in the years to come. While the process itself isn’t competitive in the traditional sense—there’s no ranking against other applicants—the real bottleneck is capacity. There simply aren’t enough assessors at the College, and falling back in the queue can mean a long wait before your application is even reviewed.
My advice is simple: get your Portfolio Pathway application ready and submitted as early as possible. Don’t postpone it. You’ll thank yourself later—trust me.
