Graduate Spotlight on BA (Hons) Contemporary Portraiture graduate Ella Sheltawy ()!

"Ella is a British-Egyptian emerging artist from Yorkshire. Her work uses mood and environment to explore the feeling of dissonance at a time when the world is becoming increasingly divided and damaged. She collages as she paints combining personal and found imagery, with sketches, to create uncanny spaces which are both fantastical and precarious. Her work has been featured in the a-n Degree Show Guide, and she has exhibited at the Mall Galleries, hARTslane, The Playroom and The Royal Academy Summer Show."

Graduate Spotlight on BA (Hons) Contemporary Portraiture graduate Alice Priory ()!

"Alice Priory is a figurative painter, exploring themes of identity, visibility, and connection through a female lens.
Her current project depicts groups of self-aware women who share a dream-like communal space, yet each remains in their own inner world.

At the heart of her work is what it feels like to be seen. In a culture where we are constantly aware of being observed, by others and by ourselves, she explores the tension between authenticity and performance, and how our sense of self is shaped through social awareness."

Graduate Spotlight on BA (Hons) Fine Art graduate Anton Hvorak ()!

"Anton Hvorak is an artist living and working in London.
His work explores the idea of beauty — questioning whether it is an objective reality or a subjective experience.

Anton’s practice carries a subtle sense of humour and is informed by a surrealist sensibility. His work creates situations in which beauty can be imagined, questioned, desired, and perhaps never fully attained.

Working across painting, sculpture, installation, and mixed media, Anton continuously searches for a visual language capable of expressing ideas rooted in beauty, emotion, and memory. Inspired by nature, everyday objects, and human presence, he transforms familiar subjects into poetic and sometimes unexpected statements."

Week 3 of "Painting and Developing Your Style" with the brilliant Beñat Olaberria () saw students diving into abstraction and experimental mark-making.

This session focused on loosening up — moving away from representation and exploring how paint behaves, what gestures emerge, and how marks can communicate without needing to depict anything directly.

The resulting work is full of movement and energy. It’s brilliant seeing everyone take risks, experiment with process, and push their paintings into new territory. We’re looking forward to seeing what the final personal projects bring in the last two weeks!

Hands, structure, gesture — week 3 of "Sculpting the Hand and Foot" with Laura Postle () has the studio fully focused!

Working from life casts, students have been carefully blocking in the major planes of the hand, establishing proportion and studying the anatomy that gives these forms their complexity. From bone structure to gesture, it’s all about learning how to simplify intricate forms while holding onto the delicacy and movement of the subject.

As the sculptures develop, it’s brilliant to see the work becoming more nuanced — fingers gaining expression, forms emerging, and each student finding their own way through the process. A demanding subject and some fantastic progress all round!

Graduate Show Spotlight on BA (Hons) Contemporary Portraiture student Deborah Simon Frank (.simon.frank)!

Having grown up within the suburbs of London then moving into the sub-rural, artist Deborah Simon Frank's work zooms in and crops potential monuments and markers in the landscape where human presence is re-framed.

Her work explores locational identity and paint application in order to yoke the physical actions and rhythms in which both the artist and land workers enact.
