The French Open has once again highlighted one of the biggest challenges in elite tennis: heat. World No.1 Jannik Sinner’s second-round defeat highlights the impact of heat stress after he claims his reason for defeat was due to muscle cramps and dizziness experienced on court.
Research has shown that tennis players can reach core body temperatures approaching levels that impair performance and, in some cases, increase the risk of exertional heat illness.
The encouraging news is that heat tolerance can be trained.
In our latest blog ‘The Hidden Opponent’ we explore further how heat affects tennis performance, how heat training can improve performance and safety to provide practical applications for players and coaches.
