‘R’ Word of the Week: RIANT - Derived from the French word for laughter, if you’re riant then you’re constantly smiling or always seem to be in a bright, cheerful mood. A bright, cheerful mood itself, incidentally, is a riancy.

‘Several Circles’ [1926] by Wassily Kandinsky (1866 - 1944)
- Oil on canvas

In this painting, circles of varying colours and sizes float on a black background. Our eye is drawn to the largest circle over which many other circles overlap. This large circle, which is a deep blue, has a bright white rim which blends into the darkness around it. This stark contrast between light and dark stimulates the viewer, looking almost like a solar eclipse. The circles have different levels of transparency, and some circles can be seen underneath others, showing new colours as they combine hues. Kandinsky’s colour theory placed emphasis on the emotional connotations of colours, and their ability to move his audience. At the time of making this piece, Kandinsky was teaching at the Bauhaus School, which focussed on the pure forms of shapes and geometry in its architecture and costume design. We can see this geometrical Bauhaus influence in Kandinsky’s move towards Abstract Expressionism.

Introducing our latest feature, ‘Artwork of the Week’ in association with our friends Go give them a follow for their montage of art and music, released every evening.

Book of the Month: 'East West Street: On the Origins of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity' by Philippe Sands

This piece of non-fiction combines memoir, biography, history, and the study of international law to explore the creation and development of world-changing legal concepts as a result of the atrocities of the Holocaust. This book won the Bailie Gifford Prize of Non-Fiction.

East West Street follows the evolution of Lauterpacht and Lemkin as they studied at Lviv university with the same professors but having never met. Both are considered to be the fathers of modern human rights and at the same time presented diametrically opposite revolutionary ideas of humanitarian law that has changed the world.

This book will change the way we look at the world, our understanding of history, and how civilization has tried to cope with mass murder.
